Predators Fall 5-3 To Golden Knights In Vegas

Nashville's Jonathan Marchessault scores in emotional return but team struggles late in the game

In a thrilling matchup at T-Mobile Arena, the Nashville Predators faced off against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night, April 12, 2025, in a game that showcased both teams' contrasting seasons. The Predators, who have struggled throughout the year, fell to the Golden Knights with a final score of 5-3, concluding their road schedule with just two games remaining in the 2024-25 campaign.

The game started with an unexpected turn as the Predators took an early 1-0 lead just minutes into the first period. Jordan Oesterle scored with a well-placed one-timer that found its way past Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill, sending a ripple of excitement through the Nashville bench. However, the Golden Knights quickly responded, demonstrating their offensive prowess.

Vegas turned the tide in the second period, scoring three consecutive goals and taking a commanding 3-1 lead. Brett Howden tied the game with a quick wrist shot, followed by Nicolas Roy and Alexander Holtz finding the back of the net, leaving the Predators reeling. Despite the pressure, Nashville's goaltender Justus Annunen managed to make 25 saves, keeping his team in the game.

As the third period unfolded, the Predators showed resilience, fighting back to tie the game at 3-3. Jonathan Marchessault, in a highly anticipated return to Vegas after signing a five-year contract with Nashville, scored against his former team, showcasing his skill and determination. Marchessault received a beautiful pass from Zach L'Heureux, who executed a slick spin move to create space before feeding the puck to the former Golden Knight.

Just a few minutes later, Marc Del Gaizo redirected a shot from Andreas Englund, leveling the score and igniting hopes of a comeback for Nashville. "We’re not going to quit, and we didn't quit again tonight," Predators head coach Andrew Brunette stated post-game. "Just really disappointing how we let a goal in late in the game. We could have kept that tight. I'd like our chances in overtime and a shootout, but unfortunately, we gave them one there.”

However, the Golden Knights were not to be outdone. With only 1:55 left on the clock, Noah Hanifin scored the go-ahead goal with a shot from the blueline, sealing the victory for Vegas. An empty-net goal by Ivan Barbashev in the final second added insult to injury for the Predators, who were left to ponder what could have been.

The loss dropped Nashville's record to 29-43-8, while the Golden Knights improved to 49-22-9, solidifying their position as one of the top teams in the league. Despite the defeat, the Predators demonstrated a fighting spirit, especially in the third period, which Brunette praised. "I thought in the third period we started playing hockey. They're a really good team. They force you into a lot of those mistakes. But we just kind of weren't ready for the pace of the game and for the lack of space out there," he reflected.

Looking ahead, the Predators will host the Utah Hockey Club on Monday, April 14, 2025, before wrapping up their season against the Dallas Stars on April 16. With only two games left, the team is eager to finish strong and build momentum heading into the offseason. Brunette emphasized the importance of these final games, stating, "There’s a couple home games; we can get a good feeling before we break for the summer. You're always going to remember your last couple, so hopefully we play the right way. We'll get excited to play and try to end on the right note.”

For the Golden Knights, their victory not only showcased their dominance but also highlighted their playoff readiness as they prepare for the postseason. With a solid record and a well-rounded team, Vegas is poised to make a deep run in the playoffs, having already clinched their spot for the 2025 postseason.

This matchup served as a reminder of the intense competition in the NHL, especially as teams gear up for the playoffs. With the Golden Knights looking to defend their title and the Predators aiming to finish their season on a high note, the remaining games promise to be exciting for hockey fans everywhere.
