Prada Teams Up With Axiom Space For Lunar Missions

The Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit reflects innovative design for NASA's Artemis III mission

Italian luxury brand Prada has taken unconventional strides by collaborating with Houston-based Axiom Space to design the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit for NASA's upcoming Artemis III mission, which is poised for launch in 2026. This futuristic partnership aims to blend human creativity with advanced engineering, ensuring astronauts are equipped with both style and functionality as they prepare for lunar exploration.

Unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress held in Milan, the AxEMU encapsulates the spirit of innovation, marking the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972, astronauts will don new attire for moon landings. The suit sports the familiar bulky white shell with contemporary touches—subtle grey patches adorning the knees and elbows, accented with red trim reminiscent of Prada’s Linea Rossa line. Its sleek, gender-neutral design emphasizes both practicality and modernity, catering to the diverse body shapes of its future wearers.

The AxEMU isn’t just about looks; it's engineered to withstand the harsh lunar environment. Designed to handle extreme temperatures at the moon’s south pole and the chilling conditions of permanently shadowed regions, its exterior reflects heat, keeping astronauts safe from intense solar radiation and lunar dust. The suit has been rigorously tested, including underwater simulations mimicking the conditions astronauts will face on the moon’s surface. Its design allows astronauts to perform spacewalks lasting up to eight hours, equipped with cutting-edge technology for communication, lighting, and scientific tasks.

Matt Ondler, president of Axiom Space, expressed excitement about the creation, declaring, “Our elite teams have redefined spacesuit development, establishing new pathways to innovative solutions and applying a state-of-the-art design approach for the AxEMU.” This sentiment echoes the collaborative spirit between Axiom and Prada, which emphasizes the integration of diverse backgrounds and skills to tackle complex challenges.

Fernando Bertelli, Prada’s Chief Marketing Officer, noted the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries: “Going beyond our limits is one of the company’s values... I’m very proud of the result we’re showing today.” This collaboration signifies Prada stepping beyond the fashion runway and entering the frontier of space exploration.

But the AxEMU is more than just stylish attire for astronauts; it reflects the broader trend of luxury brands butting heads with the burgeoning space tourism and exploration industries. Other luxury brands are similarly dipping their toes; for example, French fashion house Pierre Cardin has also revealed plans for astronaut training attire to be utilized at the European Space Agency's training center.

The Artemis III mission will have groundbreaking goals, strategically aiming not just to send astronauts back to the moon but to establish a sustainable presence on its surface—a stepping stone for future Mars missions. The mission plans to land two astronauts on the moon, with two other crew members remaining aboard the Orion spacecraft orbiting above. They will engage in scientific studies, including geological measurements and resource sample collections, for approximately 30 days, with the lunar surface explorations expected to span about one week.

This monumental mission promises to include significant accomplishments, including the involvement of the first woman and the first person of color on the moon, setting examples for future generations. The collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space, encapsulating both artistry and engineering, is set to inspire not only adventurers paving new paths through the stars but perhaps fashion designers on Earth yearning for the forefront of innovation. With Artemis III on the horizon, the AxEMU might just become the new symbol of humanity's next chapter of adventure among the stars.
