This partnership centers on creating new spacesuits, fittingly called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), which are slated to outfit astronauts for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III moon mission.

Set to launch no earlier than September 2026, this mission marks historic ground; if all goes according to plan, it will be the first time astronauts have set foot on the lunar surface since Apollo 17, which occurred over fifty years ago. Most significantly, the mission holds the potential to see the first woman and person of color walk on the moon, marking yet another milestone for diversity and representation in space exploration.

The announcement of this fashion-forward collaboration was made recently at the International Astronautical Congress held in Milan, where Prada has its international base. This eye-catching turn of events could easily lead one to question: How do fashion and space exploration intersect?

Matt Ondler, president of Axiom Space, expressed his excitement about this groundbreaking union, saying, “Our elite teams have redefined spacesuit development, establishing new pathways to innovative solutions.” It’s not just about aesthetics; this partnership seeks to blend creativity with engineering rigor, enhancing next-generation spacesuit design for the extreme conditions of space.

The AxEMU is not merely another spacesuit; it boasts impressive advancements intended to withstand the formidable lunar environment, including the notorious lunar dust known for its potentially harmful properties. This dust, which can damage human lungs if inhaled, poses one of the many challenges NASA seeks to overcome as they gear up for lunar expeditions.

Prada’s engineering prowess contributes significantly to enhancing comfort and performance through the use of cutting-edge materials and innovative construction techniques. A pivotal factor of the AxEMU's design includes its evolvable, scalable architecture, which Axiom describes as highly adaptable to varying types of missions, whether they're on the moon or low-Earth orbit.

During the design phase, Prada’s craftiness extended beyond traditional fashion. The design notes made by the Prada product team dictated unique recommendations for durable materials and smart sewing methods. Together with Axiom's engineers, they crafted solutions to improve comfort and functionality, merging aesthetics with the practical needs of astronauts.

At the Milan event, it was emphasized how the AxEMU is engineered to cater to all potential crew members - regardless of gender or size - from the first to the 99th percentile. This is particularly important as diversity is key to ensuring the overall effectiveness and comfort of the astronauts taking part. The suit's innovative features allow for maneuvers such as spacewalks for up to eight hours, thanks to advancements like the regenerable carbon dioxide scrubbing system and state-of-the-art cooling technologies.

Interestingly, it’s not just the fit and functionality of the suits that's under scrutiny; Axiom has ensured the design will withstand harsh conditions at the lunar south pole. Temperatures can plummet drastically, especially when considering regions shielded from the sunlight for prolonged periods - testing showed the AxEMU can maintain immersion for over two hours even under the coldest conditions.

One significant aspect of the AxEMU design is the advanced coatings applied to the helmet and visor, enhancing visibility for astronauts during their tasks on the lunar surface. The gloves feature several technical advancements, revolutionizing how astronauts engage with their equipment and surroundings. The collaboration was first teased back in October 2023 when Axiom briefly revealed some initial prototypes of the AxEMU. This earlier draft included dark fabric to conceal proprietary technology. Now, the suits are confirmed to be constructed from white materials to effectively reflect sunlight, protect astronauts from extreme heat, and combat issues posed by lunar dust.

He shared how this monumental project is aligned with the brand’s core values—exploring frontiers of human capabilities and pushing the limits of design.

Notably, luxury brands aren't isolative; they’re entering the aerospace arena more frequently as NASA has embraced private-public partnerships to amplify creativity and leverage diverse expertise. This scenario isn't new—like when Elon Musk enlisted Hollywood designer Jose Fernandez to create the spacesuits for its inaugural Dragon mission; it seems space exploration is becoming more entwined with the high-fashion world.

NASA’s Artemis missions signify the next major step forward—not only as they seek to create history by returning to the moon but also as they work closely with Axiom Space and other notable entities to align aeronautical advancements with high-quality design culture.

For the AxEMU, Axiom Space diligently announced they are edging closer to the completion of the design phase. By 2025, the current focus will transition to the “critical design review,” which marks the spacesuit's formal evaluation of its technical specifications, which include extensive NASA qualification testing. Once all criteria are successfully achieved, the suit will officially be enlisted for the Artemis III mission.
