Power Outage Disrupts Tram Services Across Manchester

Tram services suspended after damage to overhead lines causes major delays for commuters

A power outage is causing significant disruption to tram services across Manchester today, April 29, 2025. All tram services in the city centre have been suspended, with the Ashton line completely shut down. The issue began at around 10:15 AM at the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop, leading to the closure of several city centre stops and a ripple effect on other routes.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has stated that they are working to restore services 'as a matter of urgency,' but have cautioned that the disruption could extend well into the afternoon. Ian Davies, TfGM’s Interim Director for Metrolink, explained the situation in a statement: “Due to a loss of power, we are currently unable to run tram services across the city centre and other parts of the network. We are investigating this as a matter of urgency, with operator staff on site and across the network, and apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.”

Davies added that the nature of the incident could affect people’s journeys home from school and work later in the day. He urged customers to check the Bee Network app, website, and social media channels for the latest updates. “We will of course keep customers updated throughout the day,” he said.

The cause of the outage has been identified as damage to the overhead lines near Deansgate-Castlefield. Following the initial report of the power loss and damage to a pantograph, which connects trams to the overhead power lines, specialists were dispatched to assess and repair the situation.

As a result of the power outage, a revised service pattern was announced around 3 PM, allowing some tram services to resume, albeit with delays. The amended routes include: Altrincham to Cornbrook, Eccles to Cornbrook, Manchester Airport to Firswood, East Didsbury to Firswood, Rochdale Town Centre to Exchange Square, Bury to Ashton-under-Lyne, and Trafford Centre to Wharfside. However, services into or through the Deansgate-Castlefield area remain suspended.

Passengers are advised to use alternative transportation options during this disruption. Metrolink tickets are being accepted on Bee Network buses and some local train services. Customers can simply show their Metrolink ticket or pass when boarding the buses.

Reports from the scene indicate that trams are being held between Exchange Square and St Peter’s Square, with some trams reportedly stuck at stations like Exchange Square. One passenger noted that a tram had pulled up to St Peter’s Square but was not moving, indicating ongoing issues despite the restoration of power.

Images shared on social media show the scene at Deansgate-Castlefield, where the problems originated. The disruption has led to a significant impact on commuters, with many expressing frustration over the delays and uncertainty regarding their travel plans.

In light of the ongoing situation, TfGM has reiterated their commitment to keeping passengers informed. “We are sorry to anyone whose journey has or will be impacted because of today’s disruption,” Davies remarked. He emphasized that staff are on site to assist passengers as needed.

Travel bosses are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected throughout the day as repair work progresses. Passengers are encouraged to remain patient and stay updated on the latest service information.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by public transport systems, particularly during peak travel times. As the city continues to navigate this disruption, the focus remains on restoring normal services as quickly and safely as possible.

For those affected, the advice is clear: plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid delays. The Bee Network app and website will provide the most current information regarding tram services and alternative transport options.

In summary, the power outage in Manchester city centre has led to widespread tram service suspensions and significant disruption for commuters. With ongoing repairs and revised service patterns in place, passengers are advised to stay informed and seek alternative travel options.
