Portsmouth Football Club Navigates Player Dynamics After Recent Matches

Cohen Bramall's strong performance raises questions about left-back position while Regan Poole commits for the long-term.

In recent weeks, Portsmouth Football Club has experienced a shift in player dynamics as head coach John Mousinho continues to refine his squad's options ahead of their upcoming fixtures. Connor Ogilvie's position as first-choice left-back has been a significant point of discussion following Cohen Bramall's impressive performance during his first start for the club.

On March 19, 2025, Portsmouth faced Preston, where Bramall tallied a man-of-the-match display. Initially joining the club from Rotherham during the January transfer window, Bramall's arrival was met with expectations of adding depth to the squad. Despite his strong showing against Preston, Mousinho suggested that Ogilvie would retain his starting spot at left-back. "I am not necessarily sure that Connor is going to lose his spot at left-back, but if we can shift things around, then Cohen is certainly a good option," Mousinho stated.

Mousinho praised Bramall's performance, highlighting how he was particularly unlucky not to score after hitting the inside of the bar during the match. He added, "The way Preston played we thought it would lead into having a bit more athleticism on the pitch and Cohen is one of the best athletes we've got, so we thought he'd be able to break from deep and not just have that reliance on Murph to give us the outlet. Cohen gave us a load of energy going forward, he nearly scored and produced a couple of really good crosses."

Although Bramall's effort did not secure a victory for Portsmouth, with the club suffering a 2-1 defeat, his performance raised hopes for a bright future. Ogilvie was moved to the center of defense for the match, partnering with Regan Poole in replacing Marlon Pack, illustrating the coach’s tactical adjustments. "He defended pretty well for the most part; he just needed to sort his feet a couple of times when the ball went to the back post and he didn't really clear it," Mousinho noted while reflecting on Ogilvie’s defensive performance.

As for Bramall, he has made eight appearances for Portsmouth since joining the club and is eager to solidify his position. He signed a six-month deal but is determined to prove his worth and contribute to the team's success. The challenge remains in earning a more permanent spot, especially with Ogilvie’s established role.

In another significant development, Regan Poole has committed to Portsmouth by signing new terms that extend his contract until the summer of 2027, with an option for an additional year. As of March 19, 2025, Poole revealed the club’s commitment was key to his decision, illustrating their desire to keep him onboard even as he battled through recovery from a serious knee injury.

Reflecting on his contract negotiations, Poole stated, "I’m delighted to stay here. I think the club have put faith in me to get back to where I was last season, before I did my knee. I haven’t got there yet, but I know I will and the club know I will." His commitment to Portsmouth emphasizes a strong bond with the fans, who have supported him during his lengthy recovery.

Significantly, Poole’s contract was negotiated while he was sidelined, highlighting the trust the club placed in him. "It was just a matter of time when it was done, because the club wanted to do it and I wanted to do it. It was just a case of when. Now I’m back playing and fit again it was just a matter of time, so I’m delighted and happy to be here," he expressed.

Since joining Portsmouth, Poole has made 35 appearances and aims to play a pivotal role in the team moving forward. He expressed a desire to be a leader, mentioning, "I want to be a leader here. I’ve been captain at my other clubs and I’ve captained this club, which is a huge honour. I’m hoping I’m a leader already. If anyone turns to me for advice, I’m there. I hope I’m seen as a leader, I see myself as a leader and the gaffer does as well. I want to be a mainstay.”

With both Ogilvie and Bramall looking to establish their roles in the team, and with Poole's commitment, Portsmouth is gearing up for the challenges ahead. The coming week will be crucial for the Blues as they navigate their strategies and line-ups to find success in their future clashes. Whether Bramall can unseat Ogilvie from the left-back position and how Poole's leadership will manifest on the field remain key narratives as Portsmouth presses on.
