Port Stephens Crowned Wotif's 2025 Aussie Town Of The Year

With stunning landscapes and growing popularity, Port Stephens shines as Australia's top destination for 2025.

Port Stephens, located just over two hours from Sydney, has been crowned Wotif's "2025 Aussie Town of the Year," marking it as one of Australia's premier holiday destinations. The coastal region, which encompasses stunning beaches, the breathtaking Stockton Sand Dunes—the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere—and rich national parks, was recognized for its natural beauty and growing appeal.

The announcement was made last Wednesday during Wotif's annual recognition of trending Australian destinations. Wotif travel expert Rebecca Hurley stated, "Port Stephens' popularity is well and truly soaring this year," highlighting the area’s remarkable increase of over 75% in accommodation interest compared to the previous year.

Coming in strong behind Port Stephens are Cairns, Queensland, and Mandurah, Western Australia, rounding out the top three. This year's awards, based on Wotif's data indexes, celebrate both quality and affordability, as well as traveller satisfaction. Port Stephens offers more than just stunning vistas; it caters to diverse interests, from adventurous water sports to serene beach vacations.

According to Hurley, the winning town is ideal for those wishing to "switch off" thanks to its combination of laid-back luxury and natural wonders. She noted, "Whether it's relaxing on pristine beaches or venturing through scenic parks, Port Stephens has something for everyone. It's the perfect destination for families, couples, and adventure seekers alike.”

Port Stephens plays host to over 2 million domestic and international visitors annually, and is accessible via a flight to Newcastle Airport or by driving from Sydney. The region boasts attractions such as NSW’s best seafood restaurant, The Poyer's, which recently garnered accolades at the Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards.

"We are so proud to share our beautiful region with visitors and can't wait to welcome even more travelers this year," stated Leah Anderson, Mayor of Port Stephens. She emphasized the area’s commitment to providing exceptional service and unforgettable experiences, underlining the tourism community's engagement and dedication.

The region's hinterland is equally alluring, with lush rainforests and charming rural villages adding another layer to Port Stephens' appeal. Activities such as bushwalking, wildlife encounters, and local produce tastings invite visitors to engage with the area on multiple levels. Anderson praised four exceptional local tourism operators recognized at the recent NSW Tourism Awards: Moonshadow Cruises, Aquamarine Adventures, Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, and 4WD Tours are Us.

Investment continues to thrive, bolstering Port Stephens' reputation as a premier tourism destination with developments like Bannisters and The Anchorage, and revitalizing establishments like the Shoal Bay Country Club. Such enhancements aim to create vibrant experiences for both visitors and locals.

Unique events throughout the year, such as Love Sea Food and the upcoming Shoal Bay Food & Wine Festival, focus on showcasing the region’s culinary strengths. Anderson added, "The Council explores opportunities to improve infrastructure and events, effectively strengthening the town's appeal and supporting local businesses."

Wotif’s research indicates 78% of Australians plan to travel domestically this year—a notable 9% increase from last year. Short vacations of three to five days have become the preferred choice for travelers, reflecting changing patterns sparked by lifestyle adjustments.

Rebecca Hurley acknowledged these trends, stressing the importance of value for money, especially amid rising living costs. The awards list, now celebrating its eighth year, serves as both guidance for travelers and recognition for towns gaining momentum on the hospitality scene.

Other top 10 awardees demonstrate Australia’s diverse offerings, ranging from coastal getaways to charming inland towns like Beechworth and Murray Bridge. Each town brings unique flavors, making Australia’s domestic travel experience rich and rewarding.

Port Stephens’ designation as Wotif's 2025 Aussie Town of the Year has solidified its status among coveted travel destinations, positioning it as not just a place to visit but to explore and make memories.

The future looks bright for Port Stephens and its tourism industry as they welcome travelers with open arms, encouraging both adventure and relaxation on their idyllic shores.
