WPTV's Joel Lopez reported from the fire's location, where the smell of smoke was still lingering in the air on Friday morning. Evidence of the fire that scorched over two acres of land was apparent, with ashes coated across the yards of residences nearby. Contessa Allen, a mother of four, expressed her worries about the immediate danger as reflections of soot and debris began to accumulate around her property. "We’re seeing soot, we’re seeing debris," she remarked. "You can even look on the trampoline that it's covered in debris. It’s just scary to think how close it got."
Allen described the chaotic and alarming scene, recalling her house was just yards away from the fire's edge. "Right here in the backyard, high levels of flames, it was just literally running to us," she recounted, remembering how she awoke to the smell of smoke and then saw the flames worsening. "I was very emotional, just more so of a fear, that it's coming to our home," she continued. "My kids, forget about everything else, like the personal belongings let’s just get yourself up and get going." Allen noted that she did not receive an alert concerning the fire.
Her neighbor Al Deucette shared his alarming encounter when he stepped outside. "When I came outside it was blazing and it was nothing but smoke out here," he recounted, highlighting the immediate threat the fire posed to the community. He praised the efforts of the firefighters, stating, "I just gotta say they did a good job, they did a good job," as many neighbors came together to support families while firefighters battled the blaze.
As the smoke from the fire settles, residents are left grappling with the lingering question: What caused the fire? Deucette expressed his curiosity, stating, "There was no lightning, there was nothing last night that could’ve started it, so I really would like to know how it started." Lopez reached out to the Florida Forest Service for answers regarding the origin of the fire, and while officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, they suspect that embers from another nearby fire may have flown into the area to ignite the dry brush in the preserve.

"With all the talks, all the fires in all the states, I thought, 'Oh no, I hope it's not starting here,'" he shared. Echoing community fears, the PBCFR's dispatch center received over 150 calls within a one-hour period, primarily related to residents reporting a "smell of smoke" in the western Boca Raton area.
