Pope Francis' Coffin Closed In Solemn Ceremony

A poignant farewell marks the closing of Pope Francis' coffin as the world mourns his passing.

The closing of Pope Francis' coffin took place on the evening of April 25, 2025, in a solemn rite held at the Altar of the Confession in St. Peter's Basilica. The ceremony, which began at 8:00 PM and concluded at 9:00 PM, was presided over by Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell, with the presence of a select group of high-ranking prelates and some family members of the late Pope.

As the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week, the Vatican reported that approximately 250,000 people had come to pay their respects over the three days leading up to this significant moment. The Basilica, closed to the public at 7:00 PM on the day of the rite, became a sacred space for remembrance and reflection.

During the ceremony, Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the Master of Liturgical Celebrations, read the "rogito," a document commemorating the life and significant works of Pope Francis. This document was subsequently placed inside the coffin. The rogito concluded with heartfelt words celebrating the Pope's legacy: "Francesco has left us a remarkable testament of humanity, holy life, and universal fatherhood."

The rite was marked by several poignant gestures, including the placing of a white silk veil over the Pope's face. This act symbolized reverence and the hope that he would now contemplate the face of the Father, alongside the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the Saints.

In addition to the veil, a bag containing coins and medals minted during Francis's papacy was placed within the coffin, along with a metal tube that held the rogito. These items serve as symbols of the Pope's service during his time in office and are a testament to his impactful leadership.

The ceremony adhered strictly to the prescriptions of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, ensuring that all liturgical norms were respected. As the rite drew to a close, the coffin was sealed, with the zinc lid adorned with a cross, the coat of arms of the deceased Pope, and a plaque inscribed with his name, the dates of his life, and his papal ministry.

After the coffin was closed, the Cardinal Camerlengo blessed the body with holy water, marking a final farewell to the beloved pontiff. The evening concluded with the singing of hymns and the recitation of Psalms, culminating in the joyful proclamation of "Christ is risen, alleluia!"

Throughout the night, the Chapter of San Pietro will ensure a continuous presence of prayer and vigil at the body of Pope Francis, as preparations are made for the funeral Mass scheduled for 10:00 AM on April 26, 2025, to be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re in St. Peter's Square.

As the Catholic Church and the world reflect on the life of Pope Francis, many will remember him for his unwavering commitment to social justice, compassion, and interfaith dialogue. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of leaders and followers alike.
