Starting with Liberty, Missouri, the Clay County Sheriff’s office was caught off guard when Homeland Security agents conducted a raid at El Potro Mexican Café on Friday. Sheriff Will Akin revealed he was informed by friends about the operation, stating, “He goes, ‘Will, what do I do? They’re over at El Potro and they’re conducting a,’ and I’m going to put this in air quotes, ‘raid on the restaurant.’” His curiosity piqued, he rushed to the scene, insisting, “I need to know what the heck’s going on in my county.”
It turns out the federal agents arrived on site to execute a warrant linked to child sex crimes, but social media posts sparked widespread concern among local residents. Akin confirmed, “A lot of people know when HSI shows up, they’re there for illegal immigration,” noting the fear within the community as 12 employees were taken from the restaurant. “It just made everybody scared... we’ve been working for a lot of years together,” lamented El Potro manager Yadira DeLaTorre.

Sheriff Akin expressed frustration with the panic it caused, urging, “I just wish people would simmer down... don’t believe everything you see on social media.” Nevertheless, the restaurant continued operations for the dinner service, making adjustments to replace the staff taken.

V Reeves, an advocate with Housekeys Action Network Denver, provided insight from the ground, recounting, “Around 20 or so different federal agents came knocking... with fully armed gear, and all kinds of weapons on hand, knocking at the door and waking his family up at 6 a.m.” Other residents, like Crystal Villa, were startled awake as the raids unfolded nearby, noting the anxiety rippling through the community.
“It’s not a surprise... we all knew it was gonna happen,” Villa recounted, shedding light on the atmosphere of apprehension felt by many. She noted, “I called the Colorado Rapids Response,” highlighting community support aimed at protecting residents' rights during such operations.
Across the Atlantic, the Metropolitan Police engaged in their own crackdown on theft, successfully conducting coordinated raids across London. A 16-year-old boy was arrested after police discovered around £1,000 cash and cannabis at his address, alongside 16 stolen mobile phones and a Surron electric motorcycle. Inspector John Wilde commented, “This arrest shows what we are doing to deal with theft and robbery offences,” emphasizing the police's determination to tackle rising phone thefts, which have reached alarming levels.
Commander Owain Richards echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are seeing phone thefts on an industrial scale,” and urged for cooperation from tech companies to create solutions for the overwhelming problem of device resale.
