Police Officer Killed In Drug Bust As Suspects Flee

Authorities apprehend key suspects following a deadly confrontation during a drug operation in Quang Ninh.

In a tragic turn of events during a drug bust in Quang Ninh province, a police officer lost his life while confronting armed suspects linked to a significant drug trafficking operation. The incident unfolded on the night of April 17, 2025, near the Dragon Castel apartment building in Ha Long City, where authorities arrested the ring leader, Nguyen Huu Dang, and seized 16 bricks of heroin.

As the police moved in to apprehend the suspects, they faced fierce resistance. The confrontation escalated when the suspects, armed with an AK rifle, opened fire, fatally wounding Thuong Uy Nguyen Dang Khai, a 27-year-old officer from the Quang Ninh Provincial Police’s Drug Crime Investigation Department. Despite immediate medical attention at Bai Chay Hospital, Khai succumbed to his injuries, marking a devastating loss for the police force.

Following the shooting, the remaining suspects fled the scene, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The police launched a manhunt for the suspects, including Bui Dinh Khanh, Hoang Van Dong, and Ha Quang Son, all of whom were believed to be involved in the drug operation.

By the early hours of April 18, authorities had made significant progress. At approximately 4:30 AM, police in Bac Ninh province arrested Ha Quang Son and Hoang Van Dong, along with two women who were with them. Initial interrogations revealed that after the shooting, the suspects had abandoned their Ford Ranger vehicle and repeatedly hailed taxis to evade capture.

The police efforts were led by Trung Tuong Nguyen Van Long, the Deputy Minister of Public Security, who was on-site to coordinate the operation. “We are committed to pursuing these criminals and ensuring they face justice,” he stated during a press briefing.

As the investigation unfolded, police learned that Bui Dinh Khanh had used multiple vehicles to escape towards Hai Duong province after the incident. Reports indicated that he boarded a container truck near a gas station in Kim Thanh district around 12:30 AM on April 18.

By the evening of April 18, authorities successfully apprehended Khanh in Thanh Hoa City, where he was hiding. He was reportedly dressed neatly in a white shirt and black pants at the time of his arrest, in stark contrast to the violent actions he had taken just hours earlier.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the drug trafficking ring was extensive, with Nguyen Huu Dang at its helm. He was arrested while preparing to conduct a drug deal involving 16 heroin bricks, marking a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region. Alongside Khanh, other suspects, including Ha Thuong Hai, were also arrested during various stages of the police operation.

Authorities reported that the confiscated items during the bust included not only the heroin bricks but also two military-grade firearms, a grenade, and three vehicles used in the drug trade. The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.

As the investigation continues, the Quang Ninh Provincial Police are working diligently to dismantle the entire network involved in this operation. They have issued a call for community support in identifying any remaining suspects. Citizens with information are encouraged to contact the Quang Ninh police at the hotline number 0692.808.195.

The tragic loss of Thuong Uy Nguyen Dang Khai has resonated deeply within the community and the police force, prompting calls for greater support and resources for law enforcement officials engaged in the fight against drugs. “We honor his bravery and commitment to protecting our community,” said a police spokesperson.

This incident not only highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement but also underscores the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in Vietnam. The police's rapid response and coordination in this case demonstrate their commitment to tackling this pressing issue head-on.

As authorities continue to investigate and pursue justice for Officer Khai, the community remains on alert, acknowledging the risks involved in law enforcement and the importance of collaborative efforts to combat drug-related crime.
