Four young individuals were arrested on Wednesday, November 13, during a police operation targeting two illegal drug dens, known as "narcopisos," located within the heart of Toledo's historic center. Residents had become increasingly concerned about the suspicious activities occurring at the dilapidated building on Bajada del Barco, which, just 150 meters from the city's iconic cathedral, has long been the subject of illegal occupation.
The investigation was initiated after neighbors reported frequent comings and goings of individuals, including known drug users. According to local reports, police surveillance confirmed these suspicions, leading to coordinated entrance operations by the National Police's Drug Squad. The officers discovered more than just illicit substances. Inside, they found 18 grams of concealed cocaine and over one kilogram of marijuana stored inside rice bags, employing the unique method to mask the drugs from detection.
Authorities also seized 2,500 euros in cash along with numerous fake 50-euro bills, crudely printed and likely intended for circulation. The successful operation didn't stop there; investigators uncovered over 50 items suspected to be stolen, encompassing laptops, jewelry, bicycles, and various electronic gadgets, which the suspects reportedly received as payment for drugs.
The detained are aged between 20 and 25 and include two Spaniards, one Venezuelan, and one individual from North Africa. Two of the arrested held prior records for drug offenses, indicating their continued participation in the illegal trade.
The arrests were made possible through thorough intelligence gathering by police, especially due to the collaboration of various units including the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR) and canine units from Madrid. They executed thorough searches of the identified premises, which revealed not only illegal drugs but also weapons such as swords, knives, and replica pistols.
With rampant drug issues affecting many urban centers, Toledo's Local Police are maintaining their commitment to community safety, emphasizing the importance of citizen cooperation for effective policing. Residents had expressed their dissatisfaction with the deteriorated conditions at the occupied building, clearly communicated through their direct appeals to law enforcement.
Continuing with the investigation, authorities are now addressing the source of the stolen goods, probing the possible criminal activities associated with the retrieved items. The neighborhood’s cushion of safety seems to be regaining stability as law enforcement intensifies efforts to combat drug trafficking and property crime.
