Polaris Dawn Mission Merges Science And Art

Garmin smartwatches monitor crew health during historic space flight and charity music performance

The Polaris Dawn space mission is set to capture the imagination of space enthusiasts and researchers alike, offering groundbreaking opportunities to study the human body's adaptations to the rigorous environment of space. A key player in this ambitious mission is Garmin, whose state-of-the-art fēnix 7 smartwatches have been chosen to monitor the health metrics of the crew.

Launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, the mission aims for the highest human orbit ever achieved and includes the first-ever commercial spacewalk. This five-day endeavor promises to unravel the unknowns of how space travel impacts physical health.

Using the fēnix 7 smartwatches, equipped with advanced biometric sensors, the research team can continuously track important health metrics such as heart rate, pulse oximetry, and sleep patterns. This continuous monitoring will provide researchers with invaluable data even as the crew goes about their daily functions—making it easier to understand the impacts of microgravity on the human body.

Dan Bartel, Garmin’s Vice President of Global Sales, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, "Garmin is honored to be part of this exciting research effort." He highlighted how the exceptional battery life of the fēnix 7 allows the continuous collection of biological data without any need for downtimes to recharge, making it ideal for long-duration missions.

The mission isn't just about monitoring health; it carries significant scientific and commercial research prospects, courtesy of the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor College of Medicine. The integration of Garmin’s health monitoring technology is expected to advance our knowledge of human physiology under extreme conditions.

According to Jimmy Wu, TRISH's Senior Biomedical Engineer, the data collected from the fēnix 7 watches will feed directly back to TRISH's EXPAND database, contributing to research on health and performance for all future human space exploration projects. “The trove of biometric data provided by Garmin smartwatches will allow us to more accurately understand how the body adjusts to being in space," Wu stated.

Even more fascinating is the mission’s inclusion of artistic expression. Alongside scientific exploration, the Polaris Program has partnered with renowned organizations like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to facilitate musical performances from orbit. SpaceX astronaut and Polaris Dawn crewmember Sarah Gillis, who is also a talented violinist, has played a notable role here.

Gillis is leading the initiative dubbed "Harmony of Resilience," which combines her passion for music with the overarching goals of the mission. This creative respite aims to inspire youngsters facing health challenges. The space-based performance, featuring music from John Williams’ score of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was streamed back to Earth via SpaceX’s Starlink network, providing inspiration and solidarity to children battling severe illnesses.

Speaking about the performance, Gillis said, "We wanted to share this special music moment with you as we travel around our beautiful Earth on this five-day mission." The symbolic act aims to resonate with children globally, showcasing resilience and hope during struggling times.

Sarah Gillis' background is equally inspiring. Raised as a classical violinist, she pursued her love for music alongside aerospace engineering. She credits her career at SpaceX to her mentor, former NASA astronaut Joe Tanner, who urged her to explore engineering. Gillis started as an intern at SpaceX and eventually climbed the ranks to her current position, blending her dual passions for space and music.

The Polaris Dawn mission marks another landmark effort, extending human presence beyond conventional boundaries. The astronauts on this mission are not just trailblazers for space exploration but also ambassadors for humanity's artistic spirit. With the crew set to fly approximately 870 miles from Earth—the farthest distance from home since the Apollo 17 mission—it’s clear the stakes are high.

The mission is packed with challenges, including the experimental nature of the spacecraft and the commercial focus, which blends scientific exploration with private sector ambitions. The spacewalk, which took place earlier as part of the mission objectives, allowed astronauts to test new, more flexible space suits, inching closer to practical applications for commercial space ventures.

This mission promises to assuage some of the mysteries surrounding long-duration space travel and its effects on human health. Garmin’s contributions represent just one piece of the puzzle, as researchers combine efforts from various fields, all with the aim of making future human space exploration safe and sustainable for all.

While the world watches these pioneers take unprecedented steps, the key takeaway remains: be it through advanced gadgets monitoring human health or musicians providing inspiration from the skies, Polaris Dawn is about pushing limits—both scientifically and artistically.

All eyes are now on Falcon 9 as it prepares to launch, setting the stage for humanity's next great adventure. By bridging the worlds of science, engineering, and art, the Polaris Dawn mission exemplifies not only human curiosity but also our inherent desire to connect, innovate, and inspire.
