Billionaire Jared Isaacman leads historic mission with first-ever private spacewalk

A new era of space exploration dawned on September 10, 2024, as SpaceX launched its Polaris Dawn mission, marking the first-ever private spacewalk with civilian astronauts. This ambitious mission, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, has already set records by reaching altitudes higher than any human has ventured since the Apollo moon missions ended over four decades ago.

Taking off from the Kennedy Space Center, the Falcon 9 rocket carried Isaacman and his crew—including two female SpaceX engineers, Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis, and retired Air Force pilot Scott "Kidd" Poteet—into orbit. Their mission aims to push the boundaries of human spaceflight and test new technologies, including state-of-the-art spacesuits developed for extravehicular activities (EVA).

Polaris Dawn did not just reach impressive heights; it set a record altitude of 1,400.7 kilometers (approximately 870 miles), surpassing the distance covered by NASA’s Gemini XI mission, which achieved 1,373 kilometers (about 853 miles) back in 1966. This mission marks the farthest any human has traveled from Earth since the Apollo program, making it a significant milestone for both SpaceX and the history of space travel.

The crew is expected to conduct extensive research during their five days in orbit. Their endeavors include 40 experiments aimed at studying the effects of high radiation exposure and exploring technologies relevant for future deep-space missions. They also plan to investigate intersatellite laser communication capabilities between their Dragon spacecraft and SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system. This combination of challenges and scientific inquiries aims to gather invaluable data as humanity gears up for more complex space travel.

On the third day of their mission, the astronauts will attempt the first-ever commercial spacewalk. Unlike traditional missions, the Crew Dragon capsule lacks a separate airlock, meaning the entire craft will be depressurized to allow the two crew members to step outside, all shielded by newly developed EVA suits.

The development of these suits has been rapid compared to NASA’s decade-long efforts to update its outdated designs. Isaacman, who is not only the mission’s financer but also its commander, expressed the mission's goals during recent press briefings. He mentioned the intent behind gathering data about spacewalk conditions, emphasizing the importance of learning more about how humans can safely work and survive beyond our planet. "I wasn’t alive when humans walked on the moon," Isaacman noted, reflecting on the historic weight of this endeavor.

The Polaris mission is poised to contribute significantly to our knowledge about human capabilities and limitations when venturing far beyond Earth. Although commercial endeavors like this attract some skepticism, especially concerning safety and the motives behind them, experts regard such missions as necessary steps toward broader horizons for humanity.
