Poland Prepares For Severe Frost This Weekend

Cold temperatures and frost warnings issued across the country as winter chill returns

As the weekend approaches, Poland braces for a significant drop in temperatures, with forecasts predicting widespread ground frost across much of the country. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued first-level warnings for frost, indicating that the cold snap will impact various regions, particularly in the north and east.

According to reports published on April 26, 2025, the weather for Sunday, April 27, is expected to be clear or slightly cloudy, with minimum temperatures ranging from -2°C to 0°C across most of Poland. In the western and southern parts of the country, temperatures may reach up to 2°C, but ground temperatures could plummet to as low as -5°C in many areas.

Wind conditions are forecasted to be generally weak, blowing from the north-east and north, with a shift to easterly winds in the western regions. The maximum temperatures will vary significantly, with predictions of around 10°C in the northern areas and mountainous regions, approximately 12°C in central Poland, and a warmer 16°C in the west.

In Łódź and its surrounding areas, the forecast indicates a minimum temperature between -1°C and 1°C, with ground frost potentially dipping to -3°C. The maximum temperature for Sunday in this region is projected to be between 12°C and 14°C.

The IMGW has issued two frost warnings for Łódź and its vicinity. The first warning is valid from midnight to 6:30 AM on April 27, affecting several districts including Bełchatów, Opoczno, and Piotrków Trybunalski. This warning anticipates a drop in air temperature to around -1°C, with ground temperatures falling to -5°C. The second warning is in effect from 2:00 AM on April 26 to 6:30 AM on April 27, covering other districts such as Kutno and Łódź, predicting similar temperature drops.

Moreover, the coldest morning reported on April 26 was in northern Poland, where temperatures dipped below 0°C at a height of 2 meters. The town of Lębork recorded the lowest temperature at nearly -3°C. Ground temperatures fell to -5°C in the north and -1°C in central areas, with the coldest recorded temperature being -6°C in Łeba.

As the night progresses from April 26 to April 27, ground frost is expected to blanket the entire country. In the eastern regions, temperatures may drop to between -7°C and -5°C, while other areas could see temperatures fall to around -2°C to -4°C. Frost is also anticipated at a standard height of 2 meters, especially in the eastern half of the country, where readings of -2°C to -1°C are expected.

Farmers and gardeners are being advised to take precautionary measures to protect their crops from the impending frost, which poses a significant risk of damage. The weather forecast suggests that the cold snap will continue into the night of April 27 to April 28, with ground frost likely affecting mainly the northern and eastern regions, where temperatures are expected to again reach around -5°C.

This current wave of cold weather is significant, as it marks one of the coldest nights expected during this frost season. The sky will remain clear, allowing temperatures to potentially reach as low as -3°C, with even colder conditions at ground level. The driest areas, particularly from Podlasie to Warmia, northern Mazovia, Kuyavia, Kashubia, and Western Pomerania, are likely to experience the most severe drops in temperature.

In these regions, temperatures at a height of 2 meters are expected to range from -3°C to -1°C, while at ground level, they could drop to -5°C. Slightly warmer temperatures are forecasted for the Lublin, Łódź, Mazowieckie, and Wielkopolskie provinces, where readings may hover around 0°C to -1°C. In the southern and western parts of the country, temperatures are expected to be around 0°C to +2°C, but ground temperatures will still be below zero.

Looking ahead, warmer weather is anticipated starting from Tuesday, April 29, 2025, but meteorologists warn that another cold spell may arrive around May 5, 2025. This fluctuation in temperatures is not uncommon during this transitional period of spring, where cold fronts can still sweep through the region.

As the weekend progresses, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and to prepare for the cold conditions that lie ahead. The IMGW continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety during this cold snap.
