Poland Embraces Shopping Sunday On April 27

Major retailers and malls will be open for eager shoppers before the May holiday weekend.

As the sun shines and thoughts turn to the long May weekend, Poles are faced with a familiar question: Is April 27 a shopping Sunday? The answer is a resounding yes! On this day, shoppers can freely hit the stores, whether alone, with family, or friends. April 27 is one of the eight designated shopping Sundays in Poland, a day when shops are open for business.

On April 27, 2025, major retail chains such as Biedronka, Lidl, Carrefour, Auchan, Kaufland, Aldi, Dino, and Netto will welcome customers. Smaller grocery stores, including Żabka, will also be open, making it easy for shoppers to stock up on essentials.

Shopping malls will be bustling with activity as well. Not only will clothing stores be open, but restaurants, cafes, and service points will also be available to cater to the public’s needs. Drugstores, such as Rossmann and Hebe, along with construction and gardening stores like Castorama, OBI, and Leroy Merlin, will be operating as usual.

This shopping Sunday is particularly strategic, as it comes right before the May Day holiday, allowing consumers to prepare for their upcoming trips and leisure activities. The Polish government has designated specific shopping Sundays throughout the year, mainly coinciding with times when consumers are most likely to shop, such as before holidays or the beginning of summer vacations.

So, where can you shop? On April 27, 2025, you can visit all the major retail chains, including Biedronka, Lidl, Carrefour, Auchan, Netto, and Kaufland. Most shopping centers will remain open until 8 PM or 9 PM, giving you plenty of time to complete your shopping.

However, if you miss out on this shopping Sunday, you’ll have to wait until June 29, 2025, for the next opportunity. Other shopping Sundays for the remainder of the year include August 31, December 7, December 14, and December 21.

Since the introduction of the Act on the restriction of trade on Sundays and public holidays on January 10, 2018, the number of shopping Sundays has been gradually reduced. Initially, the trade ban did not apply on the first and last Sundays of the month. However, from January 2019, shopping was only permitted on the last Sunday of each month. In 2020, the number of shopping Sundays was limited to seven per year. In 2025, this number will be slightly increased to eight.

The law specifies that the shopping ban does not apply on three consecutive Sundays before Christmas, the Sunday directly before Easter, and the last Sundays in January, April, June, and August. This means that on April 27, shopping is allowed, and consumers can enjoy the convenience of shopping on this day.

For those who are planning to shop on April 27, it’s important to note that many stores will have extended hours. Biedronka, for example, will be open until 10 PM, with over 3,500 stores extending their operating hours from April 24 to April 26 to accommodate pre-holiday shopping.

Other stores will have varying hours as well. Carrefour stores may stay open until 10 PM, while Lidl will operate until 9 PM in most locations. Auchan will have different hours depending on the city, with larger stores open until 9 PM and smaller ones closing at 5 PM. Dino will be open until 8 PM, and Aldi will operate until 8 PM as well. Netto stores typically open from 7 AM to 10 PM, while Żabka stores can vary widely in their hours.

As for the upcoming holidays, May 1 (Labor Day) is a public holiday, and most stores will be closed. On May 2 (Polish Flag Day), however, most shops will be open, while May 3 (Constitution Day) will again see many stores closed. May 4 is not a shopping Sunday, so most shops will remain closed, except for those exempt from the trading ban.

In summary, April 27, 2025, presents a unique opportunity for Polish consumers to shop freely. With a variety of stores open and extended hours in many locations, it’s the perfect time to prepare for the May holiday weekend. Don’t miss out on this chance to stock up before the break!
