P&O Cruise Crew Faces Backlash Over KKK Costume Incident

Passengers express horror as crew dress similar to KKK during Christmas event, prompting apologies from P&O.

Passengers aboard the P&O Cruises Pacific Explorer were left speechless after crew members dressed up during a Christmas-themed event, leading to outrage and shock among guests. Many deemed the costumes resembling those of the Ku Klux Klan entirely inappropriate for the holiday festivities.

The incident unfolded on December 19, when the Pacific Explorer, set for Hobart and other nearby destinations, began its eight-night cruise from Melbourne. What was meant to be cheerful fun quickly turned sour as passengers witnessed housekeeping staff parading on the ship’s Lido deck clad head-to-toe in white, with pointed hats and masks, evoking images associated with the infamous hate group.

Passengers were initially excited about the festivities. One traveler, Terri (who asked not to reveal her last name), described how she felt compelled by the atmosphere to capture the moment on her camera. "There was a lot of excitement, and suddenly, it all turned quiet when the staff appeared," she said. "Everyone was like, 'What the hell?'—it was stunningly awkward." Terri shared the experience on a Facebook group, coining what some others referred to as the "KKK cruise.” The jarring sight left her and many others visibly taken aback.

P&O Cruises quickly attempted to clarify the situation, asserting the crew had dressed as “snow cones” for their holiday event and did not intend any offense by their choice of costumes. A spokesperson from the cruise line expressed regret over any discomfort caused, stating, "We regret if a recent incident on a Pacific Explorer cruise offended any guests," underscoring their belief it was due to misinterpretation.

Nevertheless, the incident was highly publicized, sparking debates over cultural sensitivity and the potential for misrepresentation. Lynne Scrivens, P&O’s communications director, defended the staff's intentions on local radio, stating emphatically, "The idea of this being a KKK cruise… is just ridiculous. It’s just stupid to even think there was any malice there." She explained the situation during what was meant to be festive and family-oriented activities.

The point of contention intensified when descriptions of the Klan's historical use of white hoods and robes to generate fear and propagate racist ideologies were brought up, highlighting the contradiction faced by the festive event. Scrivens noted, "Our crew are from different cultures all over the world... They’re young, and they’ve just never heard of the organization or what their outfits could symbolize." This raises the question about the responsibility of organizations to educate their staff on historical contexts.

After the incident, passengers like Terri were left feeling disappointed as there were no immediate apologies provided by the senior crew members, prompting her to seek answers. "I (requested) a please explain and have received no response,” she lamented, emphasizing the need for greater accountability and awareness, especially considering the current societal climate.

P&O Cruises, acknowledging the incident had caused widespread distress, reassured the public they were taking the matter seriously. Their official statement reiterated the crew members' confusion over how their costumes could be misconstrued and resolved to address the issue internally. "Staff have been counseled around this incident... and we will make sure this does not happen again," the spokesperson mentioned.

While the pacific experience was disrupted by the incident, Scrivens concluded with a note on the diversity and innocence of the crew as they navigate working and living on cruise ships, stating, "They’re not going to Spotlight to buy materials for dressing up. They’re making do with what they have. Everyone involved didn't mean to hurt or offend anyone, and they're all deeply apologetic for the misunderstanding."

This incident, nonetheless, raises important conversations about awareness surrounding cultures, sensitivities, and how businesses can teach and motivate staff on the prevailing advice of cultural respect, especially among diverse workplaces like cruise ships. Such discussions could pave the way for improved training and policies moving forward as businesses work to reconcile joyful celebrations with the need for cultural sensitivity.
