Plymouth Man Sentenced For Atrocious Dog Attack

Lewis Simmons receives suspended sentence after violently attacking his two dogs.

A man has received a suspended prison sentence after admitting to brutally attacking his two pet dogs in a Plymouth car park. Lewis Simmons, 31, was sentenced by Plymouth Crown Court after admitting to causing unnecessary suffering following the horrific incident which was captured on CCTV.

The court heard the attack occurred on October 8, 2023, around 6:30 am at the Marks and Spencer car park. Prosecutor Greg Richardson presented chilling footage where Simmons was seen dragging his large Cane Corso dog named Luna across the car park, repeatedly whipping her with metal leads, and even stabbing her several times with the pointed end of a golf umbrella. Shocking details revealed how Simmons stamped on the dog’s head 17 times. When confronted by passersby after they heard the agonizing squeals of the dog, Simmons attempted to justify his actions by claiming the dogs had been troublesome. "I have taken steps to improve my lot, stopping my drug habit, securing accommodation, seeking mental health help," Simmons stated during the court proceedings.

Witnesses reported hearing thudding noises and the distressed wailing of the dogs, which prompted them to step outside and check on the situation. They were horrified to find Simmons engaging in what was described as a prolonged attack lasting almost half an hour. Passersby managed to intervene before the situation escalated even more.

During the hearing, it was revealed Simmons had been homeless at the time, living on the streets and struggling with personal issues. His advocate, Francesca Whebell, argued this was an isolated incident, emphasizing the significant changes he had since made. "This was a substantial level of pain during his attack," Judge Matthew Turner remarked, clearly reflecting the court's stance on the severity of Simmons' actions.

The consequences for Simmons included a six-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, and he has also been banned from owning dogs for five years, with the possibility of the ban being lifted only after he demonstrates he is fit to be considered for dog ownership again.

The brutal incident has raised significant concerns about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners. Cane Corsos, such as Luna, are known for their strength and loyalty but can also require responsible ownership to prevent aggression and mistreatment. Simmons’ previous convictions for violence, unrelated to animals, add to the disquiet surrounding this case.

After expressing genuine remorse and acknowledging the need for mental health support, Simmons is now working with local services aimed to assist those experiencing homelessness and mental health crises. Judge Turner noted Simmons has engaged with rehabilitation services, and the court took this factor seriously when deciding on the sentence. The judge allowed Simmons the opportunity to reflect and to pursue his goal of becoming someone who helps others.

While the future of Simmons may hold potential for recovery, the case has ignited conversations about the protection of animals and the importance of responsible pet ownership. The court's decision is seen as both punitive and rehabilitative, hoping to address not just the crime itself but the underlying issues leading to such violence.

This shocking case serves as a reminder of the ugly reality of animal cruelty, prompting calls for community vigilance and support for individuals struggling with personal challenges to prevent future incidents of this nature.
