The annual Plein Air Art Competition is officially underway in Iberia Parish, running from March 10 to March 15, 2025. This year, 26 talented artists from across the country are painting their way through seven different parishes in Acadiana, showcasing their skills and creativity.
Hosted by the City of New Iberia, the competition has taken on new life, moving from its previous home at Shadows on the Teche. The change of venue promises to bring fresh energy to the week-long event, which is not only about artistic expression but also about engaging the local community.
The Plein Air competition is structured around various activities spread throughout the week, allowing locals to interact with artists and participate in art-related events. On Saturday, March 8, the competition kicked off with the Quick Draw event at 4 p.m. in downtown New Iberia, drawing enthusiastic participants and spectators alike. The following day, March 9, featured the Paint Delcambre event at 8 a.m., where artists captured the beauty of the area.
Monday, March 10, is designated as another free paint day, allowing artists the flexibility to paint wherever their creativity takes them. This is followed by scheduled painting demonstrations to highlight various techniques. On March 11, there will be a demo at 1 p.m. at the UL Alumni House, located at 600 East St. Mary Blvd. in Lafayette, providing insight to attendees about the artists' methods and the art-making process.
The excitement continues with another free paint day on March 12, after which the spotlight will shift to more interactive events. Artists will participate in another painting demonstration on March 13 at 2 p.m., near the downtown area, showcasing their creative processes and engaging with the audience.
The pinnacle of the competition will be on Friday, March 14. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., artists will take part in the Paint Out event, where they can paint outdoors, connecting with their surroundings. Later on, at 6:30 p.m., the Awards Ceremony and Fine Art Sale will take place at the Sliman Arts Center, located at 129 E. Main Street. This event will allow attendees not only to celebrate the artists and their works but also to purchase artwork directly from the competition.
Finally, the paintings from this competition will be available for viewing at the Sliman Theater until 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. This offers the community one last chance to appreciate the works created during the event. It also provides opportunities for art enthusiasts and potential buyers to acquire pieces of art inspired by Acadiana's unique landscapes and culture.
The Plein Air Art Competition is more than just an artistic event; it's about building community connections, fostering creativity, and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region. Local residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate and experience the vibrant art scene being cultivated during this exciting week.
