Billionaire entrepreneur Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group, has unveiled ambitious plans to transform the popular Gulmarg ski resort in Jammu and Kashmir's northern region, aiming to establish it as a world-class winter holiday destination. This announcement came after Jindal's meeting with the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, during the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions (MICE) event held at the Jio World Convention Centre.
"Had a great meeting with Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. We discussed the development of Gulmarg along with the ski slopes to make it a world-class destination for skiing and holidays. The JSW Group will take up various initiatives through the JSW Foundation!" tweeted Jindal, emphasizing the investment and planning dedicated to the project.
Gulmarg, located approximately 50 km from the state’s summer capital, Srinagar, is not only renowned for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its allure as a winter sports haven. The resort is expected to host the fifth Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) from February 22 to 25, 2025, where over 1,000 athletes from 35 states and Union Territories will compete.
Chief Minister Abdullah, during his visit to the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Pavilion at the OTM 2025, underscored the region's potential as a leading global tourism destination. "Tourism is a top priority for our government, and we are dedicated to positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a global tourism hotspot. Our participation in events like OTM is a step toward achieving this vision," he stated, reflecting the administration’s enthusiastic approach toward tourism promotion.
At the MICE event, Abdullah emphasized the necessity to tap Jammu and Kashmir's underutilized resources, stating, "At the MICE event... our vision? Value-driven tourism: Preserving ecology, celebrating heritage, and prioritizing immersive experiences over volume." This grand vision positions the region as more than just its natural beauty; it elevates Jammu and Kashmir as India’s all-season gateway to wonder.
The discussions at the MICE event involved several influential leaders across various sectors focused on nurturing the tourism domain. Tennis legend Vijay Amritraj proposed strategies for enhancing golf tourism and sports infrastructure. Renowned designer Anita Dongre conversed about reviving Kashmir’s traditional textiles for global markets, aiming to merge local craftsmanship with international fashion standards. Culinary expert, Michelin-starred Chef Vikas Khanna, weighed on using Kashmir’s unique cuisine as leverage for enriching culinary tourism and fostering cultural exchange.
Wellness tourism also took center stage, with expert Mickey Mehra presenting concepts to integrate wellness retreats harmoniously within the serene landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir. These discussions didn’t neglect healthcare innovation either, as the health team focused on advancing public health initiatives and preventive care frameworks within the region.
Representatives from tech startups discussed digital innovations aimed at empowering local entrepreneurship and enhancing the region's infrastructure. This multifaceted approach, bringing together various sectors, is poised to invigorate Jammu and Kashmir's economy, creating lasting benefits for both residents and visitors.
JSW’s commitment to the development of Gulmarg is indicative of its larger vision to facilitate sustainable growth through responsible tourism practices. The recent meetings signal significant interest from private enterprises to invest and engage with the rich natural and cultural resources of Jammu and Kashmir.
With the Khelo India Winter Games just around the corner, the focus lies on not just sporting excellence but also on showcasing the potentials of Gulmarg and the region's ability to host international events. This initiative undoubtedly places Gulmarg on the global tourism map and can bring unprecedented attention to the area, sparking increased visitation from both domestic and international travelers.
Through concerted efforts from both the public and private sectors, the goal is clear: to advance Jammu and Kashmir as not merely a beautiful escape but as the epitome of cultural richness, adventure, wellness, and culinary refinement.
Overall, the collaborative efforts between JSW Group and the Jammu and Kashmir government indicate thrilling prospects for the region, reaffirming the commitment to fostering tourism as both economically beneficial and ecologically sensitive.
