Pékin Express Returns With 20th Season Celebrations

The latest season will take contestants through untold African cultures starting January 16, 2025.

On December 23, 2024, M6 confirmed the launch of the 20th season of its flagship reality show, Pékin Express, titled "La Route des Tribus Légendaires." This milestone season will premiere on January 16, 2025, at 9:10 PM, bringing new adventures to the small screen as it celebrates two decades of exciting journeys.

Hosted by Stéphane Rotenberg since 2006, this season marks the show’s return to Africa after only two previous ventures on the continent. Notably, the last attempt was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving fans longing for more of Africa’s captivating scenery.

Season 20 will take contestants through four distinct countries: starting from the breathtaking landscapes of Tanzania, exploring Mozambique—a first for the show—before heading to the mountainous terrains of Lesotho and concluding in the vibrant streets of South Africa.

During the press conference on December 19, Rotenberg expressed heartfelt sentiments about returning to Africa, stating, "Yes, it’s complicated. Yes, sometimes there’s a bit of security to have. But what a place!" He reminisced about the challenges faced during previous seasons, adding, "It’s funny to see all the countries we’ve crossed and to think the series continues going on." His words reflect the unwavering spirit and adventure of the show which initially seemed set for only a few seasons.

This season promises not just stunning visuals but also immersive cultural experiences. Each of the four countries boasts rich histories and diverse tribes, such as the Maasai and Swahilis, which the contestants will encounter throughout their travels. The interactions with local communities will be integral to the race, highlighting the cultural exchanges and discoveries the show aims to portray.

Alongside the scenic and cultural journeys, season 20 will introduce ten unique contestant pairs, adding to the show’s traditional mix of drama and camaraderie. Among the pairs are Moâde, described as curious and dynamic, teamed with 34-year-old accounting professional Ludovic, who hopes to step out of his comfort zone. Rotenberg commented on the casting saying it feels "positive," and producer Thierry Guillaume added it’s always magical to see contestants rise to the challenges presented to them, even when they seem mismatched on paper.

One of the biggest highlights for fans is the return of the beloved "passager mystère" (mystery passenger), after 11 years of absence from the show. This addition brings celebrity personalities who will join contestant duos during parts of the race, performing tasks such as hitching rides and completing challenges on behalf of their chosen pairs. The lineup of guest stars includes notable figures like actor Bruno Solo, journalist Yoann Riou, chefs Glenn Viel and Norbert Tarayre, and TV presenter Elodie Gossuin. While additional mystery passengers are expected to join, the excitement surrounding this aspect of the show is already palpable.

Another treat for long-time fans is the notable return of Ryad and Louison, who gained fame during season 18. These dynamic contenders will not only return but will also engage viewers by participating in challenges against celebrated pairs from the past—a series of duels aimed at establishing their legacy within the competition.

While the adventure holds promise for entertainment and tension, it also signifies the importance of engaging with cultures often overlooked by mainstream media. Each contestant will face significant challenges, and the unpredictable nature of travel will amplify the suspense every week as new episodes air, leading to the thrilling season finale.

With its historical significance and vibrant potential, the 20th season of Pékin Express promises to deliver electrifying moments filled with laughter, anxiety, and heartwarming connections. Viewers are invited to partake once again on this incredible roller coaster of emotion across the stunning backdrop of Africa.

The world of Pékin Express is set for yet another exhilarating season, ensuring it remains at the forefront of adventure television as it connects audiences with the spirit of exploration and the joy of cultural encounters.
