An official statement described, "The victim managed to stop the pitbull from attacking his dog before the pitbull turned on him attacking him and drug him to the ground." According to Watford, the pet was “not aggressive” and merely reacted when the officer arrived—claiming her dog was merely protecting its house. Watford described her shock, stating, "I really can’t believe this. He shot my dog for no reason." Chino, only one year old, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was undergoing surgery at the time of the report.
The Maple Heights Police Department released statements claiming they had received multiple complaints about Chino being loose and aggressive.
