Pistons Crush Pelicans 127-81 To End Losing Streak

Cade Cunningham and Simone Fontecchio shine with standout performances as Detroit roars back at Smoothie King Center.

NEW ORLEANS — The Detroit Pistons bounced back from two consecutive losses with impressive force, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 127-81 on March 17, 2025. The game, held at the Smoothie King Center, showcased the Pistons' dominance as they displayed their offensive prowess and defensive discipline.

Cade Cunningham led the charge for the Pistons, contributing 24 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. He played the most minutes of any player, rounding out his impactful performance with strategic playmaking. While it was Cunningham who drove the offense, Simone Fontecchio shone brightly off the bench with 23 points, including five for five from beyond the arc, mirroring the team’s energy and precision.

Detroit's victory not only ended their losing streak, but it was also significant for franchise history. The 46-point win marked the second-highest margin of victory ever recorded by the Pistons, trailing only their 52-point triumph against the Denver Nuggets back on December 27, 1990. The team had previously beaten the Chicago Bulls by 40 points on February 11, 2025, making this victory their second such large win this season.

The game began with the Pistons taking control early, launching onto an impressive 17-7 run. They finished the first quarter leading by 22 points, thanks largely to holding the Pelicans to just 10-for-47 shooting (21.3%) before halftime, including a paltry 1-for-16 from three-point range. This defensive effort was pivotal as it set the tone for the game.

“We knew we needed to come out strong and set the pace early,” said Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. “The guys really responded. Cade stepped up as expected, and it was great to see Simone find his rhythm.”

Despite the Pistons' outstanding performance, the Pelicans were not without their star. Zion Williamson led his team with 30 points, managing to create scoring chances somewhat haphazardly, especially as the game progressed and Detroit's defense tightened up.

While the Pistons celebrated their success, forwards Ausar Thompson and Fontecchio's performances highlighted how pivotal bench play can be to the success of any team. Thompson came off the bench to post two points, three assists, three rebounds, and two blocks within just over six minutes of action, illustrating his growing importance on both ends of the floor.

Fontecchio, on the other hand, delivered his best showing of the season, particularly during the final period when he scored 16 of his 23 points. His six-for-six shooting effort included four three-pointers, showcasing the kind of shooting talent and confidence the Pistons have sought from him this season.

“We want him confident and to continue shooting when he’s open because we know he’s capable of getting hot,” Bickerstaff noted after the game. “Today, he showed exactly what he can do.”

Reflecting on the Pelicans' performance, coach Willie Green remarked on the team's struggles: “It's hard to win games when you can’t find your rhythm. We need to be sharper on both ends of the floor, and this loss is tough.”

The Pelicans' performance at home raised concerns, as they failed to capitalize on key moments and allowed the Pistons to control the tempo of the game from the outset. The defeat marks yet another frustrating chapter for the Pelicans as they’ve struggled for consistency this season.

The Pistons, now boasting a record of 38-31, are finding themselves increasingly positioned within the Eastern Conference playoff race. They currently sit sixth, just one game behind the Milwaukee Bucks for the fourth seed, and similarly, only one game back from the fifth-seeded Indiana Pacers. With games stacked up before the playoffs, the team needed this morale-boosting win to continue climbing the standings.

Looking forward, the Pistons' next games will be pivotal as they seek to build on this victory. Continuing this momentum could reshape their outlook heading toward the postseason. Meanwhile, the Pelicans will need to regroup quickly if they aim to turn their fortunes around and regain their standing within the competitive Western Conference.

Fans are encouraged to mark their calendars for the Pistons' upcoming matchups. The excitement surrounding this win could spark renewed energy throughout the home crowd as their team works toward potential playoff contention.
