PinkNews Director Suspended Amid Misconduct Allegations

NHS board member faces scrutiny as claims of sexual misconduct shake LGBTQ+ publication

Dr. Anthony James, who serves as the Chief Operating Officer of PinkNews and is married to its founder, Benjamin Cohen, has been suspended from his role as associate non-executive director at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This decision follows serious allegations of sexual misconduct associated with the publisher, PinkNews, which caters to the LGBTQ+ community.

The allegations first surfaced through a BBC investigation. According to reports, multiple former employees of PinkNews have accused Dr. James and Mr. Cohen of inappropriate behavior, particularly involving younger male colleagues. The allegations highlight instances where Dr. James was seen "kissing and touching" staff members who appeared intoxicated and unable to consent.

One witness recounted observing Dr. James leading one such colleague behind a tree outside of a London pub where staff members had gathered for a PinkNews event. This individual recalled feeling alarmed by the situation, noting, "Anthony was just forcing himself on somebody who wasn’t able to make the decision for themselves because of how intoxicated they were." This claim has raised significant concerns about the culture at PinkNews, prompting discussions about accountability and governance.

Reflecting on the incident, another former employee, referred to as Damian by the BBC, revealed how uncomfortable he felt when Mr. Cohen invited him to their home after claiming Dr. James was away. During the invitation, Cohen allegedly made suggestive comments about his husband, creating what was perceived as pressure to engage in inappropriate behavior.

Current staff members have expressed fears about the workplace environment, labeling it as "volatile" and describing instances of bullying and sexual misconduct. Many have voiced concerns about voicing complaints, especially related to actions involving the CEO's husband. One former staff member lamented, "It’s the CEO’s husband, what are you going to do? Lose your job?" This reflection signifies the power dynamics at play within the organization, where many felt obligated to remain silent for fear of professional repercussions.

The BBC investigation shined a light on what numerous sources termed as a "culture of heavy drinking" within the PinkNews workplace, where alcohol reportedly contributed to instances of misconduct. The inquiry included testimonials from over thirty current and past employees, adding credence to the accounts of toxic behavior within the organization.

Following the lifting of the veil on these troubling accounts, the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust acknowledged the allegations lodged against Dr. James and acted swiftly by instituting his suspension on December 10, pending the outcome of investigations. A spokesperson for the Trust stated, "We are aware of the allegations made on the BBC against Dr. Anthony James. Following these allegations, we decided to suspend him from his associate non-executive role pending more information." Importantly, there are currently no allegations of wrongdoing against Dr. James during his tenure at the NHS.

Through their official representatives, Dr. James and Mr. Cohen have denied all allegations, adamantly defending their actions and character. They have indicated they are unable to comment directly on the BBC's findings at this time, but maintain their position against the claims, labeling them as untrue.

The environment described by former employees raises red flags about operational practices and highlights the need for systemic changes at PinkNews to address any underlying issues. Many still expect management changes might occur, especially with increasing calls for resignations from current staff, as there is mounting pressure to hold those at the top accountable.

The allegations have stirred significant discussion within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community about workplace ethics and accountability. Staff have shared their wish to see PinkNews, which has campaigned for LGBTQ+ rights since its inception, take steps to rectify the alleged toxic environment.

Nonetheless, the fallout from this investigation, including the continued denial from both key figures involved, will likely have lasting effects on the credibility and reputation of PinkNews as it seeks to navigate this crisis. Will this be the catalyst for change, or will it reinforce existing power structures? Only time will reveal the future of PinkNews following this tumultuous period.
