Pink Moon Set To Illuminate Skies On April 12

The first spring full moon offers cosmic insights and beauty for all zodiac signs

The first spring full moon in the Northern Hemisphere will occur on April 12, 2025, and it is popularly known as the Pink Moon. This celestial event is set to grace the night sky, captivating stargazers and astronomers alike.

According to RBC, the name "Pink Moon" derives not from any expected color change in the moon itself but rather from the blooming of the Phlox subulata plant, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox, which is native to eastern North America. This plant bursts into bloom during the spring season, providing the moon with its colorful moniker.

Interestingly, the Pink Moon is also referred to as the "Paschal full moon" because it plays a crucial role in determining the date of Easter, which in 2025 falls on April 20. This connection to Easter adds a layer of significance to the event, making it a focal point for many religious observances.

On the night of the full moon, the moon will be positioned at a distance of approximately 406,295 kilometers from Earth. This distance is noteworthy as it is further than the closest point the moon can reach, known as perigee, which is about 362,600 kilometers away. The phenomenon of the Pink Moon coinciding with its apogee, or the farthest point from Earth, will categorize it as a micromoon. Astronomically, this means the moon will appear about 15% smaller than it would during a supermoon, which occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth.

Despite its name, astronomers caution that observers should not expect the moon to take on a pink hue. The moon typically only appears red or pink during a lunar eclipse, and no such eclipse is forecasted for April. Nikolai Zheleznov, a senior researcher at the Institute of Applied Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted, "The term 'Pink Moon' does not mean that the satellite will turn pink. The Moon only turns pink or red during its eclipse. There are no lunar eclipses expected in April."

As the Pink Moon rises, it will align closely with the star Spica, the brightest star in the constellation Virgo. Observers in North America will see Spica positioned above and to the left of the moon, while in Eurasia, it will be visible below the lunar disk. However, residents of much of South America will not be able to see Spica due to the moon obscuring it.

This lunar event is particularly significant for various zodiac signs, as many astrologers believe it influences personal growth and relationships. The Pink Moon, occurring in the sign of Libra, is said to bring about a time for balance and harmony. It is the first full moon of the astrological year and coincides with Venus completing its 40-day retrograde period, transitioning into direct motion. This alignment is believed to enhance the energies surrounding relationships, finances, and self-esteem.

For each zodiac sign, the Pink Moon holds unique implications:

  • Aries (March 21 - April 19): The Pink Moon illuminates your seventh house of partnership and long-term commitments, making it an ideal time to resolve any recent relationship difficulties.
  • Taurus (April 20 - May 20): This full moon activates your sixth house of health and daily routines, encouraging a reassessment of your habits and lifestyle.
