Pietreczko Bounces Van Veen From 2025 World Darts Championship

A clinical display of doubling leads Ricardo Pietreczko to victory over Gian van Veen at Alexandra Palace.

RICARDO PIETRECZKO delivered yet another stellar performance during the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship, eliminating Gian van Veen from the tournament at Alexandra Palace on December 23, 2024. The German player, known as 'Pikachu,' showcased his prowess with doubles, effectively punishing Van Veen's missed opportunities throughout the match.

The match started with intensity as Pietreczko opened with a 180, putting immediate pressure on Van Veen. Despite the Dutchman having multiple chances to take the first leg, he failed to convert eight darts, allowing Pietreczko to capitalize and take the early lead, eventually closing out the leg with tops for a 2-0 advantage.

Van Veen, nicknamed 'The Giant,' struggled to maintain his composure as the match progressed. Although he did hit his first double to lead the second set with a magnificent 127-darter, Pietreczko quickly retaliated, leveling the sets after executing a deft 17-darter.

It was clear through the course of the match; Van Veen was hampered by his inability to finish. Missing key doubles cost him dearly, as he fell behind again after losing the third set decisively, where Pietreczko secured the lead with finishes of 122 and 74.

The third set was pivotal, where, after returning from the break, Pietreczko quickly established his dominance. He wrapped up the set with another 17-darter, leaving Van Veen with little room for error as he headed to the fourth set, now needing to claw his way back.

Van Veen initially struck first, leading with double four. But this was short-lived as Pietreczko surged back, winning the next two legs to seal Van Veen's fate. The Dutchman found himself grasping for the match and had one last opportunity at 77, but it was not to be. Pietreczko finished the match decisively with another 74 from the outer ring.

The defeat marked another disappointing early exit for Van Veen at the World Darts Championship, mirroring his performance from the previous year. Pietreczko's victory propels him forward to the third round, where he’ll face the winner of the match between Rob Cross and Scott Williams, which is scheduled to occur later tonight.

Commenting on the match, PDC Darts tweeted: "PIKACHU PUTS OUT VAN VEEN!" capturing the excitement of Pietreczko's performance. They elaborated, saying, "Delight for Ricardo Pietreczko, who produces a clinical display of doubling to condemn Gian van Veen to another early exit at Alexandra Palace!"

This tactical win not only places Pietreczko among the strong contenders moving forward but serves as another reminder of the ever-competitive nature of the PDC World Darts Championship. With players like Gurney and Hempel also gearing up for their respective matches, it’s clear the tournament is only heating up.

Fans will be eagerly watching to see how Pietreczko continues his momentum and who will emerge victorious from the upcoming matches, as the Alexandra Palace prepares for more thrilling darts action this season.
