Pieter Omtzigt Resigns From Politics Citing Burnout

NSC leader steps down after 21 years, leaving party to navigate uncertain future

Pieter Omtzigt, the leader of the Nieuw Social Contract (NSC), announced his resignation from national politics on April 18, 2025, citing ongoing burnout symptoms after 21 years in government. Omtzigt's decision, delivered in a heartfelt video message, marks a significant turning point for both him and the party he founded.

In his statement, Omtzigt emphasized the toll that political life has taken on his health, declaring, "The toll from that has been quite large, and that is why I am choosing to put my family and my own health first for the first time. Real recovery from my burnout is simply not possible in the hectic current politics in The Hague." His resignation comes after he had already stepped away from political duties previously to address his health issues.

MP Nicolien van Vroonhoven, who had been serving as Omtzigt's deputy, will take over as party leader. She expressed her deep respect for Omtzigt, saying, "I will miss Pieter enormously. I have seen from up close how sincerely, how intensely and how conscientiously he commits himself to people who are in difficulty and those who are cornered." Van Vroonhoven acknowledged the challenges Omtzigt faced, noting that the workload had overwhelmed him and that he ultimately chose to prioritize his well-being.

Omtzigt's tenure in politics is marked by his relentless advocacy for justice, particularly regarding the childcare benefits scandal, which has been a central issue in Dutch politics. This scandal involved the unjust profiling of thousands of parents by the Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax office, leading to severe financial repercussions for many families. Omtzigt has been a fierce critic of the government's handling of this issue, stating, "Although I am still full of ideas about the victims of the benefits scandal, and especially the children removed and placed outside the home, and though the work is not yet finished, I say with great regret that I will not be able to complete my mandate."

His leadership was instrumental in holding the government accountable, and he played a significant role in exposing corruption involving European politicians and the tragic murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta. His commitment to these causes earned him respect across the political spectrum, but it also placed him in contentious positions, particularly during his clashes with Geert Wilders, the leader of the PVV party. Tensions between the two escalated over remarks regarding asylum seekers and the rule of law, complicating the coalition dynamics within the government.

After the NSC performed strongly in the November 2024 elections—securing 20 of the 150 seats in the Tweede Kamer—Omtzigt's vision for the party focused on restoring civility in politics, addressing international education issues, and compensating families affected by the childcare benefits scandal. However, nearly a year and a half later, the coalition government continues to struggle with these pressing issues.

Van Vroonhoven, now stepping into the leadership role, expressed her determination to continue Omtzigt's legacy. She remarked, "Now we will continue on our path without Pieter. We will do so with his inspiration and drive. It is his philosophy that connects us." Her commitment to the party's ideals reflects the deep respect and admiration Omtzigt garnered from his colleagues.

The NSC's formation was not without its challenges. The coalition, which includes the PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB, has faced significant in-fighting and trust issues among the leaders. Omtzigt's emotional clashes during negotiations often made headlines, illustrating the strains of coalition politics. His departure raises questions about the stability of the Schoof Cabinet, particularly given the NSC's reliance on Omtzigt's reputation as a parliamentary watchdog.

Omtzigt's political career began in 2003 as a member of the CDA, where he initially served in relative anonymity. Over the years, he became a prominent figure, especially after breaking away from the CDA in 2021 to form the NSC. His campaign promises resonated with voters seeking a change from the Rutte administration's style of governance. However, the twenty seats he won in the 2023 elections became both a blessing and a curse, as they placed him in a pivotal position within the coalition, often forcing him to compromise his principles.

As Omtzigt steps away from the political arena, the future of the NSC remains uncertain. The party has already seen a decline in support in recent polls, leading many to wonder if it can sustain its relevance without its charismatic leader. Van Vroonhoven's leadership will be crucial in navigating these turbulent waters, as she aims to uphold the values and vision that Omtzigt championed.

Deputy Prime Minister Eddy van Hijum expressed his gratitude for Omtzigt's contributions, stating, "His fight against injustice, commitment and perseverance are an inspiration to many. Including to me. It is painful that Pieter now feels compelled to stop. I am extremely grateful to him, and will continue to stand up for the ideals of the Nieuw Social Contract together with colleagues in the Cabinet and the Tweede Kamer."

As the NSC transitions into this new chapter, the party will need to find a way to maintain its momentum and address the pressing issues that Omtzigt championed, particularly the unresolved childcare benefits scandal. The coming months will reveal whether the NSC can continue to thrive in the Dutch political landscape without its founding leader.
