Pierce Brosnan Insists Next James Bond Must Be British

The former 007 actor expresses concern over Amazon's control and urges respect for the iconic character.

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has voiced his thoughts on the future of the iconic character, urging the producers to keep the next 007 British amid rising concerns about Amazon's new role as the custodian of the franchise.

Brosnan, who portrayed the beloved secret agent from 1995 to 2002, emphasized the importance of maintaining the British identity of Bond. He articulated these sentiments during recent interviews following Amazon's acquisition of MGM Studios, which is believed to have cost around $1 billion.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Brosnan stated, "I hope Amazon treats this cinematic icon with 'dignity, imagination and respect.'" It's clear he is apprehensive about the potential for the character to be Americanized, calling such change unnecessary. "It's a 'given' the spy should be British," he asserted.

The discussion around the casting of the next Bond has been rife with speculation. Various names have emerged as potential successors to Daniel Craig, who concluded his tenure with the critically acclaimed No Time to Die. Frontrunners such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, and Cillian Murphy are among those considered, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Amazon's new creative control over the franchise has undoubtedly stirred mixed feelings among fans and former actors alike. Brosnan acknowledged the decision for long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to step back as they transition from the franchise they have nurtured for over sixty years. He remarked, "It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity, imagination, and respect." This sentiment echoes similar feelings expressed by Timothy Dalton, who also voiced his nostalgia for Bond's British heritage, asserting, "It is one of the few wonderful stories we've got in film, and the leading character is British. We can call it our own."

Despite these concerns, Brosnan supports the change at the helm, recognizing it might be necessary for the evolution of the character and franchise. Commenting on the historical significance of Bond, he said, "I am very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies... Everything changes, everything falls apart, and I wish them well." That said, Brosnan did not shy away from acknowledging his concerns about the potential impact Amazon might have on the legacy of 007, stating, "It does come with a certain lament."

It's worth noting the history and evolution of Bond since its inception, as each actor has brought their own unique flair to the character. Brosnan himself rejuvenated the franchise during his era with films like GoldenEye. Now, as the franchise embarks on what could be interpreted as another new chapter, the question remains: will the core essence of Bond, predominantly viewed as British, remain intact?

Though no official release date for the next Bond film has been announced, speculation continues to swirl around who might don the famous tuxedo. The long-standing oversight by Broccoli and Wilson, known for their stewardship of the Bond legacy, raises questions about whether Amazon will preserve the foundations laid by past generations of Bond films.

Some analysts warn against potential shifts reminiscent of other franchises, such as Star Wars, which saw significant changes after its acquisition by Disney. Brosnan’s reticence toward these potential changes highlights the stark cultural importance of maintaining the British identity of Bond. The iconic character's long-standing connection to British culture has made him not only popular on the silver screen but also a cultural marker worldwide.

Currently, Amazon has confirmed they are committed to continuing the franchise, with Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, praising both Wilson and Broccoli for their legacies. He stated, "We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world."

While the future remains uncertain, with yet-to-be-named directors and storylines pending, the discussions initiated by Brosnan signal deep-rooted concern and pride from those with historical ties to the franchise. Watchful eyes will remain fixed on Amazon's approach as production gears up, ensuring Bond retains his storied past even as he steps boldly toward the future.
