Pico 4 Ultra Emerges As VR Powerhouse

The latest standalone VR headset aims to rival Meta's Quest 3 with enhanced specs and comfort

The Pico 4 Ultra has arrived on the virtual reality scene, stepping up as the latest standalone headset hoping to carve out its own niche against the dominance of Meta's Quest 3. With its sleek design and impressive specs, it promises to bring something fresh to VR enthusiasts.

Upon first glance, one might mistake it for just another VR headset, but the Pico 4 Ultra is far from ordinary. Weighing 580 grams, it feels surprisingly light due to its thoughtfully balanced design, making it comfortable for long gaming sessions without causing the headaches or discomfort often associated with heavier sets. Unlike its rivals, this headset boasts features like pancake lenses and decent visuals—advantages over the more established competition.

One of the standout features of the Pico 4 Ultra is its display. The dual LCD screens run at 1920 x 1920 pixels per eye with refresh rates of 90Hz, providing gamers with smooth visuals and impressive graphics. Pancake lenses enable wider fields of view, making it easier to immerse oneself deeply within virtual worlds. The ability to electronically adjust inter-pupillary distance adds to its user-friendly design, allowing for enhanced comfort and personalized viewing experiences.

Interestingly, the headset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and flaunts 12GB of RAM, which not only aligns it with the performance of devices like the Quest 3 but also suggests future-proofing against upcoming VR games. While the standard battery life ranges from two to four hours based on activity, this varies significantly with demanding games. When immersion peaks, users might experience quicker depletion rates.

What about gaming, you ask? The performance doesn’t disappoint. For many gamers, VR experiences can be marred by motion sickness. But with the Pico 4 Ultra, many testers found relief. Unlike some headsets, it doesn’t leave you feeling like your eyes could pop out or your head bounces back and forth. This comforting design makes it feasible to jump headfirst (no pun intended) back onto the driving seat of intense VR experiences, whether it’s battling zombies or solving puzzles.

The controllers, reminiscent of the Quest 3 but uniquely longer, forego tracking rings for more freedom of movement. They feature all the typical buttons plus added conveniences for easier navigation within the virtual realms. Each controller is powered by AA batteries, which might bring mixed feelings for those dead set on rechargeable options. Despite their ergonomic feel, the tactile feedback leaves something to be desired when compared to the rumbles and vibrations of competitors’ offerings.

It is worth noting, though, the Pico 4 Ultra isn’t just about gaming. It’s equipped with mixed-reality capabilities—one of the telescope-like lenses can be switched to allow users to see their surroundings without removing the headset. This feature lends potential for not just Steam games but also uses beyond gaming. Of course, the experience is still somewhat less refined than what alternatives may offer.

Availability does pose another challenge for Pico. Currently, the device is not available stateside, which will undoubtedly hinder its adoption as users flock to more familiar brands. The pricing also plays its part. Set at £529—positioned between the lower and higher offerings of competitors, it's much more accessible than extravagant alternatives, but it’s important to weigh the limited game library available.

While some drawbacks exist—such as less impressive speakers lacking the depth of sound when compared to the Meta offerings—many feel the overall experience and features compensate for these minor setbacks. That said, with slightly fewer available titles on their storefront than Meta boasts, players tonight might find themselves searching for the perfect game to fulfill their VR dream.

The future certainly seems promising for the Pico 4 Ultra. Perhaps it could help diversify the market more and offer real competition to Meta's stronghold, especially with the continued enhancements made to hardware and software. While some may still perceive it as the underdog due to its current market positioning, this headset holds its own on several fronts. If you're based outside the U.S. and on the lookout for your next device, the Pico 4 Ultra is definitely worth considering.
