Piastri Dominates Chinese Grand Prix As McLaren Celebrates 50th One-Two Finish

Oscar Piastri claims third career win despite teammate Lando Norris battling brake issues during the race.

Oscar Piastri secured a spectacular victory at the Chinese Grand Prix on March 23, 2025, marking his third career win in Formula 1 and solidifying McLaren's dominance in the early stages of the season. Starting from pole, Piastri maintained his lead for all 56 laps at the Shanghai International Circuit, finishing nearly ten seconds ahead of teammate Lando Norris, who experienced brake issues but managed to finish second, ensuring a McLaren one-two finish.

The result is significant for McLaren, representing their 50th one-two finish in Formula 1 history. Following Norris’s win at the season opener in Australia on March 16, this latest result further cements McLaren’s position as the team to beat following a disappointing previous season.

Piastri expressed elation after the race, noting, “It’s been an incredible weekend, the car has been pretty mega.” He attributed his success partly to the tire strategy, stating, “The hard [tire] was a much better tire than everyone expected, so to go all the way to the end was a bit of a surprise, but a happy surprise.”

Norris faced his own challenges, particularly with braking issues in the closing laps that caused him to lose significant time. He described the experience as his “worst nightmare,” reporting, “I was losing two, three, four seconds the last couple of laps,” yet he still managed to hold off Mercedes’ George Russell, finishing just 1.3 seconds ahead. Norris commented, “Oscar drove well, he deserved the win,” acknowledging Piastri’s performance throughout the race.

George Russell completed the podium, finishing third, over five seconds ahead of reigning champion Max Verstappen, who snatched fourth place from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a thrilling late race maneuver. Leclerc finished fifth, with Lewis Hamilton, who won the sprint race the day before, crossing the line in sixth. Hamilton attributed some of his struggles to tire degradation and a strategy misalignment during the race.

A notable moment from the race included tributes paid to the late Eddie Jordan, the former team owner who played a pivotal role in Michael Schumacher's F1 career. Both fans and teams honored Jordan's legacy, which adds a poignant dimension to the race weekend.

Piastri’s victory elevates him to fourth place in the drivers’ championship standings with 34 points, trailing Norris, who remains in the lead with 44 points after two races. Verstappen sits in second with 36 points, while Russell is close behind in third with 35 points.

Looking ahead, the next race on the calendar is the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, scheduled for April 4-6, 2025. With the early season shaping up to be a fierce competition for the championship, fans are eager to see if McLaren can maintain their momentum or if other teams will close the gap.
