Pianist Kazuto Kaneno To Appear On ‘Muko No Heya’

The rising star shares his artistic vision and growth leading to his record-breaking Budokan performance.

Kazuto Kaneno, known as the pianist and YouTuber 'Cateen,' is set to appear on TV's popular show 'Muko no Heya' on March 4, 2025, at 13:00 on TV-Asahi. This appearance is part of his rapid ascension to fame, following the success of his recent performances and his growing online presence, which boasts 900,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

Born to a piano teacher, Kaneno discovered his love for music at an early age. Instead of being pushed through rigorous practice, his mother helped cultivate his skills by making piano practice enjoyable, equated to playing games. Reflecting on his childhood, Kaneno has stated, "I never wanted to quit playing the piano, even though practicing sometimes felt tedious. Getting up on stage was always the fun part." This playful approach to learning undoubtedly contributed to his impressive musicality.

Aside from music, Kaneno showed remarkable aptitude for mathematics as well. From solving calculation drills with enthusiasm to engaging with his father's arithmetic quizzes, he demonstrated early curiosity and zest as a student. Every visit to Disneyland, along with the long drives, became opportunities for playful math challenges, which sharpened his mind. "I loved those quizzes with matchsticks and magic squares. I enjoyed numbers more than most things," he said with nostalgia.

Until fourth grade, he was recognized for his diligence and talent, but by fifth grade, he faced academic ennui and began misbehaving, much to his teacher's dismay. His mother's acute observation led her to suggest he seek new challenges, recommending he take the junior high entrance exam. "I don’t recall deciding to take the exam, but I know my desire to see the world beyond my school motivated me," Kaneno shared.

Fast forward to 2024, Kaneno has carved out his niche as both a traditional and contemporary artist. He launched his largest-ever national tour across Japan, comprising 23 performances, which culminated at the prestigious Budokan, where he set the record for the largest audience for a solo pianist at the venue, drawing 13,000 fans.

Kaneno's artistic evolution is set to be documented in the film titled 'F確かfuture tracks,' released on February 28, 2025, which chronicles his three-year preparation for the unprecedented Budokan concert. "Standing at the intersection of tradition and innovation, I have learned to balance my classical foundations with new expressions. I believe this balance is what sets me apart from others," he explained, acknowledging the rarity of musicians who traverse both realms.

The documentary not only captures his rise to prominence but also dives deep to explore his creative process and what drives him. "Curiosity is my cornerstone. Without it, I fear I would grow bored, no matter how many times I'm on stage," Kaneno remarked. His willingness to experiment with music, incorporating different instruments like toy pianos and synthesizers during live performances and YouTube videos showcases his unquenchable thirst for creative exploration.

Kaneno's 2024 Budokan performance became not just another concert but was about expressing the 'unchanging' parts of himself—values of 'freedom' and 'flexibility.' At the heart of his artistry lies this spirit of experimentation, one he showcased throughout the recent tour, layering traditional melodies with innovative flair.

Now based out of New York, Kaneno continues to broaden his horizons internationally. Scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall this November, he expresses both excitement and trepidation about upcoming shows. Any artist could find such iconic stages overwhelming but Kaneno sees them as opportunities—platforms to tell his story through music.

Through every experience, he emphasizes the significance of curiosity, stating, "To keep delivering ‘living music’ to the audience, maintaining my curiosity and drive for improvement is invaluable." His musical endeavors resonate on levels few achieve, amalgamated through rigorous practice and heartfelt originality.

The story of Kazuto Kaneno is one of enlightenment, proving how passion nurtured under careful guidance can flourish to create unprecedented art. Whether through the thrill of performance or the intimate arc of personal growth within music, Kaneno continues to inspire audiences worldwide and remains steadfast on his path toward excellence.
