Philippe Etchebest, the renowned chef and judge on the popular cooking show Top Chef, has recently offered fans a glimpse into his life behind the scenes as the 16th season of the competition readies for its premiere. On March 25, 2025, during an appearance on the show C à vous, Etchebest revealed that he has a unique way to unwind while managing the high-stress environment of the competition.
As the countdown to the new season begins, where 14 aspiring chefs will compete for culinary glory, Etchebest shared that he had requested an electronic drum kit to be set up in the backstage area. “I’ve asked to have a small electronic drum kit so I can practice,” he explained jokingly, in response to the curious queries from host Anne-Élisabeth Lemoine. The kit, he suggested, serves as a way for him to release some pent-up energy and avoid conflicts with his fellow judges during the intense moments of the show.
When the show host pressed him, wondering if it's meant to stop him from taking his frustrations out on the contestants, he quipped, “It helps not to take it out on the other [judges] during the breaks.” This levity comes as Etchebest prepares for another season of Top Chef, set to debut on March 26, 2025.
However, the fun onstage does not eclipse the seriousness of the competition. This season seeks to crown a new champion who will succeed Jorick Dorignac, the winner of last season, and along with the coveted title, there’s a considerable check and the potential for a first Michelin star up for grabs.
In addition to cooking, Etchebest is no stranger to the world of music, actively playing in a rock band named Chef & The Gang. His love for drumming culminated in a memorable performance at Hellfest, a major music festival, in the summer of 2022, which brought together metal enthusiasts from around the globe.
While many might see television as the primary focus, Etchebest has a rather nonchalant perspective on the media landscape. During another interview on the same day with Buzz TV du Figaro, he was asked about Cyril Hanouna’s impending arrival at M6. In a candid response, Etchebest stated, “Honestly, I don’t care.” He elaborated, indicating that he feels detached from the television industry, describing it as simply a “parenthesis” in his life dedicated to his primary passion—cooking.
Etchebest’s laid-back approach continued as he pointed out that he does not concern himself with media trends or current events in the television world. “I’m very much detached,” he expressed, showing a desire to focus on his restaurants and teams rather than media hype.
The multi-talented chef jokingly recounted his limited interactions with Cyril Hanouna, reminiscing about a few appearances on shows like Touch Pas à Mon Poste and how he prefers to keep his focus elsewhere. “I’ve done it once at the start of Cauchemar en Cuisine,” he recalled, adding, “I really don’t care less.”
As the culinary competition gears up for yet another exciting season with rigorous challenges and brilliant talent, Philippe Etchebest continues to bring his distinct personality both in the kitchen and beyond. Whether it’s through the beats of drums during breaks or his humorous, dismissive takes on the broadcasting world, Etchebest remains an enchanting figure, captivating audiences and contestants alike.
