Pesaro Faces Crucial Healthcare And Safety Decisions

Community advocates raise concerns over new hospital and GNL plant amid police actions against drug crime.

Recent events have stirred the community of Pesaro as local authorities grapple with issues surrounding public safety, healthcare advancements, and environmental advocacy. These stories highlight the resilience and proactive involvement of citizens as they navigate the challenges facing their city.

The Pesaro police recently made strides in public safety with the arrest of a 20-year-old Albanian male for possession of narcotics with intent to sell. This operation resulted from comprehensive surveillance work, and according to local officials, the individual surrendered without incident, leading to the discovery of cocaine sealed inside his vehicle. The authorities were relieved to have removed potential threats from the streets and underscored the importance of vigilance concerning drug-related activities.

Following the successful arrest, attention has shifted toward healthcare improvements as the regional government prepares to present the definitive project for the new hospital in Pesaro. This initiative has faced significant hurdles, leading Matteo Ricci, the PD MEP, to express both excitement and frustration. “Finally, one step forward, it was about time. But it would be helpful to also recall the project financing left by the previous regional administration, ready to start five years ago and instead blocked,” Ricci stated. His remarks reflect dissatisfaction with the delays and urge action to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure.

While healthcare advancements stir hope, another pressing issue has emerged concerning the planned construction of a GNL liquefaction plant near the Tombaccia neighborhood. Local citizens, alongside advocacy group EveryOne, have raised alarms about the potential risks posed by the site, which is situated amid other hazardous facilities. The area has been classified as high-risk for flooding and earthquakes, compounding fears over the feasibility of emergency responses during crises.

Roberto Malini, co-president of EveryOne Group, articulated the community’s concerns, stating, “Noting the lack of evaluation for safety from the Fire Brigade is extraordinary.” The group is adamant about the need for rigorous assessments before proceeding with the project. Malini added, “We cannot ignore the Precautionary Principle outlined by the EU Treaty; when industrial activities present significant health and safety risks, they shouldn’t proceed without absolute guarantees.” This highlights the undeniable anxiety surrounding the plant’s potential impact on local residents.

Compounding these developments, the local municipality has announced temporary water service interruptions as part of broader infrastructure improvements. Scheduled for February 25, 2025, residents of specific streets across Pesaro and Cagli will experience water supply suspensions during the day for maintenance work. A spokesperson for the municipal water service provider (MMS) assured the community, “MMS will do its best to limit intervention times,” signaling their commitment to minimizing inconvenience during the repairs.

These stories highlight not only the interconnectedness of safety, healthcare, and environmental issues but also the determination of the Pesaro community to advocate for their rights and wellbeing. The city stands at the crossroads of development and accountability, as local leaders and residents work together to navigate their shared challenges and future aspirations.
