Pepe Arévalo, Iconic Mexican Musician, Passes Away

Famed for his contributions to salsa and cumbia, Arévalo leaves behind a rich legacy.

Pepe Arévalo, one of Mexico's most beloved musicians, has passed away at the age of 88 following complications from a cerebral infarction.

Arévalo had been hospitalized for nearly a month, battling the effects of the stroke he suffered on January 27. The rapper detailed the difficult condition of his father during the recent news broadcasts, explaining how challenging the last weeks had been. Pepe was undergoing intensive care, receiving oxygen and therapy as he fought to recover from his health issues.

His initial hospital admission was due to the serious health condition, where it was indicated by medical staff back then, “El pronóstico no es muy favorable.” Despite the efforts of doctors and the resilience of the musician, his health continued to deteriorate, and the family knew they were facing difficult times.

Born on February 11, 1938, Pepe Arévalo dedicated over six decades to music, where he made significant contributions, particularly under the genres of salsa and cumbia. He was renowned for his reinterpretations of regional Mexican songs, making them accessible and enjoyable to broader audiences. His ensemble, "Pepe Arévalo y sus mulatos," became famous for popular hits like "Falsaria" and "Caballo viejo," which left lasting impressions on the Mexican music scene.

Arévalo's music career included collaborations with several well-known artists, including the legendary Celia Cruz. His contributions were recognized over the years, culminating in several awards, including the prestigious Clave de la música, which he received for six decades of artistry just earlier this year.

His son José Luis shared his father's love for music, noting how the family remains grateful for the outpouring of support they received from fans and friends during this challenging time. Looking back at his father's incredible legacy, José expressed how his father’s passion for music was not just about entertainment, but about the emotions and stories captured through art. "Lo único que he hecho ha sido música, a la cual le debo todo, viajes, dinero, aventuras, tragedias, dichas," Arévalo once said, reflecting on the meaningful life music had provided him.

To honor Pepe Arévalo, there will be a commemorative event at the Sindicato de Músicos on March 9. Plans are underway for this tribute, which will feature performances from symphonic orchestras, bringing together many artists who admired Pepe and looked up to him.
