P.E.I. Premier Dennis King Announces Resignation

Decision made for family and the best interests of the province after nearly six years in office.

Prince Edward Island Premier Dennis King has made the startling announcement of his resignation, effective at noon on Friday. During an emotional news conference held on Thursday afternoon, King expressed his sentiments about stepping down as both premier and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, stating it is best for his family, the provincial government, and citizens of P.E.I.

King, who has served as the island’s premier since May 2019, shared his reasoning with clarity and sincerity, noting, "It’s news I believe is in the best interest of my family, the government, and the people of Prince Edward Island." He hopes to see the party continue forward under fresh leadership, as he acknowledged the weight of his decision.

At 53 years old, King reflected on the significant time he has spent at the helm of P.E.I. politics, emphasizing he never envisioned himself as a 'lifer' in the political scene. "I’ve felt for a long time... I had more runway behind me than I had in front of me," he said, addressing the press alongside cabinet members who visibly supported him during the transition.

The resignation follows several challenges faced by his administration, including recent struggles with U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, natural disasters such as hurricanes, and the difficult decisions around public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the hurdles, King reminded reporters of the successes during his tenure. "There have been more positives than negatives over the last six years," he remarked, expressing pride in the progress made.

Under King’s leadership, the Progressive Conservative Party was re-elected for its second mandate during the 2023 elections, marking his influence within the local governance. King’s popularity remains high, as evidenced by recent data indicating approximately 40 percent of Islanders preferred him as premier, reinforcing his strong connection to the community.

King's emotional ties were evident when he spoke about the impact his role had on his family. The premier acknowledged the toll the job took, stating, "My wife and kids have lost almost every faceoff due to the demands of this job." With tears, he recognized the benefits gained and the hardships endured by his loved ones. "You’ve had to share a dad with thousands of Islanders… but you always did so with a smile," he added, highlighting the sacrifices his family made during his time leading the province.

With his resignation set to take effect tomorrow, King indicated the Progressive Conservative caucus and party executive would appoint an interim leader and premier shortly. King expressed gratitude both to his constituents and his staff, stating, "It has been a privilege and an honour of a lifetime. You gave me your trust and I gave you my very best." His commitment to P.E.I. and its people remains evident as he transitions out of his leadership role.

The decision to step down, as King articulated, stems from both personal and public responsibilities. He stressed the importance of finding someone capable of carrying the province forward, especially during tumultuous times filled with complex political challenges. Economically, Prince Edward Island is home to around 180,000 residents, and local governance often requires leaders to tackle pressing issues closely affecting their communities.

King entered the political arena after years as a commentator and communications director for previous premiers and has now taken the bold step to conclude his chapter as premier. For many Islanders, the announcement came as a surprise, but King assured them it was crafted with the utmost consideration for what is best moving forward.

Despite the shockwaves his resignation might send across the province, King leaves behind memories of his leadership, marked by heartfelt service to the people of P.E.I. and the fortitude to make difficult decisions for the future. His political career, which he framed as one of dignity and dedication, will see its finale, but his legacy will continue to influence the upcoming leader who will take the reins.
