Peavey Industries Announces Closure Of 22 Stores

The decision impacts locations across Ontario and Nova Scotia as part of restructuring efforts.

Peavey Industries has made the difficult decision to close 22 Peavey Mart locations across Ontario and Nova Scotia. This move marks an initial step in the company's broader strategy to address significant challenges and position itself for future sustainability.

Doug Anderson, president and CEO of Peavey Industries LP, acknowledged the disruption the retail environment has faced. “We recognize difficult decisions like these are necessary to create a stable foundation for the long-term success of our business,” he stated. The closures are prompted by the need to restructure the organization due to the changing market dynamics.

The list of locations slated for closure includes stores primarily across Ontario, with notable mentions of Arnprior, Bedford, Bowmanville, Brockville, Chatham, Collingwood, Cornwall, Goderich, Grimsby, Kingston, Kitchener, Lambeth, Mount Forest, New Liskeard, Sarnia, Smiths Falls, St. Catharines, St. Jacobs, St. Thomas, Sudbury, Woodstock, and Uxbridge. One store, located on Main Street North in Mount Forest, is confirmed to close by the second quarter of 2025.

While these stores will shut their doors, not all Peavey Mart locations are affected. For example, the outlets located in Owen Sound and Walkerton will continue to operate, reassuring customers of their availability. Peavey Industries has historically been significant within rural communities, primarily serving farmers and those working with agricultural products.

“Oh no, the farming community needs this store,” commented Lorraine Willett, expressing her disappointment over the news. Many customers have taken to social media to express their feelings, showcasing the mixed reactions among the local populace. Barbara Payne Fluney noted the store's closing was not unexpected considering the drop in patronage since it transitioned from TSC to Peavey Mart.

Peavey Mart's origins can be traced back to 1967 when it began as National Farmway, which was known for its super farm markets. Over the years, it has transformed, becoming synonymous with hardware and agricultural supplies, particularly after taking over TSC stores between 2016 and 2020.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Scott Patterson, who remarked, “Peavey drove this franchise right off a cliff. There is strong demand for stores providing wares to small business farmers, rural citizens and homesteaders.” His assertion reflects broader concerns about the future of hardware and agricultural supply stores catering to these communities.

The company's restructuring efforts are deemed necessary as they navigate through these turbulent times, with many companies facing unprecedented challenges. The management reassures customers about its focus on long-term growth and stability, even as it closes several locations.

Isabel Buckmaster, the Local Journalism Initiative reporter for GuelphToday, reports on how closure decisions will impact local economies and customer reliance on these establishments. “I’m really not surprised. We used to go there a lot when it was TSC,” noted another local customer. Responses indicate the store’s foundational role over the years.

Despite the challenges, Peavey Industries emphasizes its continued operation across Canada, which boasts around 90 stores varying in size from 10,000 to 48,000 square feet. Therefore, customers are encouraged to visit remaining locations for their hardware and agricultural needs as the company adapts, ensuring accessibility continues for consumers across the provinces.

With these closures, Peavey is not only addressing immediate operational issues but also signaling to the market its commitment to restructuring and long-term sustainability. Customers and community members are left watching closely as the company makes these significant shifts, hoping for renewal rather than continued decline.
