Paul Pogba Faces Uncertain Future After Doping Ban

The talented midfielder searches for a new club following an 18-month suspension and contract termination with Juventus.

Paul Pogba's professional future remains uncertain as he navigates the aftermath of an 18-month doping ban that has left him without a club since March 2025. The 32-year-old French midfielder, celebrated for his talent but often contentious during his two stints at Manchester United, recently completed a suspension for consuming a banned substance, which was initially set for four years but reduced to 18 months on appeal.

Pogba was provisionally suspended in September 2023 after his random drug test revealed elevated testosterone levels. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) deemed that he did not intentionally take the substance, paving the way for a return to professional play starting this March. His journey over the last year reflects a mix of missteps and potential redemption.

During his ban, Pogba mutually terminated his contract with Juventus, where he had found himself in a difficult position. His departure from the Serie A giants, effectively confirmed via Instagram in November 2024, saw him thanking the club and its fans: “There are times when things don’t go the way we want, but one thing is certain: the bond I have with you, dear fans, will remain unforgettable.” The challenge remains for Pogba as he finds himself a free agent, trying to maneuver in a competitive transfer market.

For Manchester United fans, the prospect of Pogba's return to Old Trafford has been a topic of much speculation. Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær once described Pogba as a “fantastic” player, so it’s no surprise that interest has resurfaced. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano played down these discussions, stating, “We have seen stories recently about Pogba returning to Man United, but my information is there is nothing to it.” Romano emphasized that United has shifted focus towards young talents, hinting at a new direction under the current management.

Amid these changes, Manchester United has made strides by recruiting eight under-21 players, showcasing its aim to build a squad with younger, dynamic players. While they remain in need of midfield reinforcements, it appears that Pogba, due to fitness concerns and age—especially after such a long layoff—may not be the right fit for the team’s revamped strategy.

Pogba's relationship with Manchester United is complicated by his history at the club. He contributed significantly during his tenure, registering 39 goals and 48 assists over 233 appearances in all competitions. Yet his fluctuating performances and off-pitch controversies, notably his animalistic training surroundings under Sir Alex Ferguson, have marred his legacy.

As speculation continues, Pogba has also stirred conversations about potential moves abroad, particularly after meeting with David Beckham ahead of the MLS season. Despite this connection, nothing has materialized concerning a deal with Inter Miami, further emphasizing the ambiguity around his future.

There were even rumors that Pogba might reunite with former teammate Mason Greenwood at Olympique Marseille, but Pogba characterized these reports as “not credible,” laughing them off during a conversation in November 2024. “I laugh because it is Uncle Pat [Patrick Evra], he said it as a joke,” Pogba explained, adding that he was focused on getting back to fitness and finding a suitable club. “Nobody knows what tomorrow holds, so never say never,” Pogba suggested, alluding to the uncertainty in his career.

Looking forward, Pogba remains hopeful of finding a new team where he can rediscover his footing in professional football. His time spent away from the game due to suspension has only fueled his ambition. “I will appreciate the game more than before after it was taken away from me. I realized how important it was for me,” said Pogba on Sky Sports in October 2024. This newfound perspective could serve as a catalyst for a successful return.

Amid this backdrop, discussions have arisen about Arsenal potentially signing Pogba. Former Gunners player Bacary Sagna urged his old club to consider the midfielder, citing his experience and how he thrives alongside younger players. “He has time away from football, and he’ll be back with a desire to get back into a good space and play football again,” Sagna remarked in October 2024.

The unfolding narrative of Pogba's career is one of resilience in the face of adversity. His next move will likely be crucial; finding the right environment could either lead to a rejuvenated chapter in his career or another misstep. As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Pogba and the potential opportunities that may arise.
