Pattaya Police Arrest Four Teens After Assaulting 80-Year-Old Belgian Man

The brutal attack on Christmas Day raises safety concerns among locals and tourists alike.

Thai police have reported the arrest of four teenagers believed to be involved in the brutal assault of Richard Ander M. Van Bogaert, an 80-year-old Belgian man, during the early hours of December 25, 2023, in Pattaya, Thailand. The incident occurred near The Village Pattaya, situated just off the beaten path of the city's vibrant bar scene.

According to local authorities, around 12:36 AM, Van Bogaert was walking home after celebrating Christmas at local bars when he was approached by the group on two motorbikes. They allegedly attacked him with knives, resulting in severe injuries and the theft of approximately 7,000 baht (about $200).

Eyewitness accounts reveal how the assault unfolded. Van Bogaert, known to enjoy the local nightlife over the years, was ambushed outside the village entrance by six youths. His caretaker, Pornthip Jamueang, recounted his distressing ordeal, explaining how he was suddenly surrounded and attacked before the assailants fled, leaving him bleeding on the pavement.

"I was just walking home when they attacked me without warning," Van Bogaert reportedly stated, highlighting the shocking and unexpected nature of the assault.

Local police, alerted by the caretaker following the brutal attack, quickly dispatched crime scene investigators from Pattaya Police Station. Pol. Col. Nawind Thirawit, the station's chief, oversaw the initial investigation and established protocols for tracking down the suspects, emphasizing the importance of community safety.

"We are investigating the incident through witness accounts and CCTV footage to determine the exact circumstances leading to the assault,” Nawind stated to reporters.

Utilizing surveillance cameras located near the scene, authorities were able to identify the suspects' getaway vehicle and assist investigators. This led to the swift apprehension of four suspects, all of whom confessed to their involvement during police interrogations. The suspects are aged between 15 and 18 years, with one teenager, identified only as 'A,' claiming they needed money to pay for damages incurred during an unrelated traffic incident.

"We will hold those responsible accountable for their actions to deter future incidents," Pol. Col. Nawind emphasized during the press conference announcing the arrests, which have restored some sense of security within the Pattaya community.

After the assault, Van Bogaert was rushed to the hospital, where he received timely medical care for his injuries, which included severe cuts to the head. Fortunately, he has been reported stable following treatment. Local authorities are working closely with him to provide support during his recovery process.

While this incident has raised concerns about safety for expatriates and tourists alike, community leaders insist on bolstering security measures around popular nightlife areas. Residents hope this incident will not tarnish the reputation of Pattaya as a welcoming destination for international visitors.

This latest assault, marked by its brutality, serves as a reminder of the challenges facing law enforcement agencies amid the festive season, where alcohol-fueled altercations often rise. Pattaya has previously managed to maintain its image as a tourist haven, but incidents like these may prompt power shifts within community policing efforts.

The rapid response of the police, combined with the use of advanced technologies like CCTV, showcases the importance of modern investigative methods to solve crimes efficiently. Authorities aim to utilize this successful case as a benchmark for handling similar incidents proactively, aligning with their long-term strategy of maintaining public safety and reassurance.

Despite fears, the arrest of the suspects provides some relief for residents and tourists, signaling law enforcement's commitment to restoring order and ensuring the safety of foreign nationals living or vacationing within the city. Looking forward, community trust will be pivotal for the improvement of neighborhood safety and the overall appeal of Pattaya as a tourism hotspot.
