Parkrun Gears Up With Festive Season Events

Community celebrates the New Year and Christmas with special running events

During the festive season, when many activities come to a halt, parkrun steps up its game with additional events, inviting community participation on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This year proved no different, as parkrun enthusiasts embraced the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate the spirit of togetherness.

The Greenock Parkrun, held on December 28, 2024, marked the year's final event with impressive participation. A total of 140 participants took part, encompassing runners, joggers, walkers, and enthusiastic onlookers. Among the crowd, 18 first-time participants were welcomed, and 14 individuals set new personal bests. Adrian Young from Ayrodynamic Runners clinched the top position, completing the course with a stellar time of 17 minutes and 24 seconds, which also marked his new personal best. He was followed closely by Chris Upson from Cambuslang Harriers, who finished just four seconds later.

On the women’s side, Elizabeth Gemmell emerged victorious, crossing the finish line at 22 minutes and 27 seconds. This end-of-the-year gathering not only highlighted the seasoned parkrunners but also showcased the potential of new participants. Young runners also left their mark, with Freya Lamb completing her 10th parkrun as part of the under-10s category.

Competitive spirits thrived as two other young runners from the 11-14 age group achieved remarkable times, with Angus Hutchison recording 19 minutes and 6 seconds and Louis Reid not far behind at 19 minutes and 7 seconds. Such achievements reflect the commitment and enthusiasm of the community to support each other through physical fitness and shared experiences.

The success of the event was underpinned not just by the runners but also by the dedication of volunteers. With 28 volunteers assisting during the Greenock run, the commitment of the community was palpable. Later, the week before Christmas, the Padiham Greenway Junior parkrun wrapped up its year with 16 young runners participating, cheered on by family members and numerous volunteers.

That December day was marked by dry and mild weather, creating perfect conditions for the junior runners. The participation of youth and families fosters not only health advantages but also nurtures community spirit, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity.

The festive season continues to inspire people of all ages and abilities. Each week throughout the year, parkrun events enable people to come together for free and friendly 5km runs, jogs, or walks across the UK and beyond. Notably, as mentioned, Greenock Parkrun has hosted 52 events throughout 2024, averaging 127 runners per week with volunteers playing a significant role. The highest turnout for the year reached 209 participants, showcasing the growing interest and engagement within the community.

The overarching goal of parkrun remains focused on encouraging people from various backgrounds to engage physically and socially. Adding festive events to the calendar not only enhances participation during the holiday season but also reinforces the ethos of parkrun—where everyone is welcome, and the effort is celebrated, regardless of the finishing time.

Reflecting on this year’s festivities, participants shared enthusiasm for upcoming events. The parkrun community appears eager to kickstart the new year together, promising more opportunities for connections, health, and joy. With the New Year fast approaching, the first run of 2025 is already on the horizon, inviting more challenges and camaraderie among avid runners.

With these spirited events, parkrun continues to make strides not just as a fitness initiative but as a vibrant communal hub. The promise of new beginnings with each event keeps the community spirit alive, reminding everyone to lace up their running shoes all year round.
