Panthers Edge Penguins 3-2 After Thrilling Shootout

Spencer Knight shines as Florida survives late rally to secure back-to-back wins.

The Florida Panthers pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 3, 2025, at the Amerant Bank Arena, showcasing impressive performances from their backup goaltender Spencer Knight and timely scoring from key players.

The matchup was part of the regular NHL season, where both teams were eager for points. The Panthers entered the game with some momentum, having won six out of their last nine games, whereas the Penguins were struggling to regain their footing this season.

The first period saw no goals, but it was packed with action. Notably, the Panthers faced early challenges, including a four-minute power play against them when Sam Reinhart was called for high sticking. Knight, stepping up as the goaltender, stopped four shots during this penalty kill, laying the groundwork for his performance later. During this opening frame, he made 13 saves, setting the tone for the game.

Action picked up quickly at the start of the second period. At just 36 seconds in, defenseman Gus Forsling scored with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line, giving Florida the 1-0 lead. It was thrilling to see such quick scoring, and Forsling’s effort was well received by the home crowd. Coach Paul Maurice noted, "He made a couple of really big saves there at the end, and that's so important for him and for our team on back-to-back nights."

Florida’s lead wouldn’t last long, as soon after, Penguins star Sidney Crosby capitalized on Florida's penalty troubles. When A.J. Greer was penalized for high sticking, Crosby scored right off the faceoff, tying the game 1-1. The energy shifted back to the Penguins as they capitalized on the momentum.

Yet, the Panthers responded with vigor. Matthew Tkachuk, who had spent 12 minutes sidelined due to misconduct stemming from post-whistle skirmishes, made his impact felt immediately after returning to the ice. He deflected a shot by Carter Verhaeghe past Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry. This goal brought Florida back to the lead at 2-1 and marked Tkachuk's first point after enduring his own scoring drought.

Not to be outdone, Pittsburgh drew level again. Sam Bennett received a roughing penalty for hitting Drew O'Connor, resulting in yet another power play for the Penguins. With less than 40 seconds remaining, Rickard Rakell took full advantage of having the extra attacker on the ice, scoring to tie the game 2-2, sending it to overtime.

The five-minute overtime session was heart-pounding, featuring multiple high-quality scoring chances but no goals. Knight and Jarry were both outstanding, stopping each other’s attempts as they exchanged big saves with the game hanging on the line.

With neither team finding the net, the game progressed to the shootout. Spencer Knight’s heroics continued as he stopped attempts from both Rakell and Crosby, keeping the Panthers within reach. On Florida’s side, Anton Lundell and Sam Reinhart converted their shootout attempts, sealing the victory for the Panthers.

Post-game, Knight reflected on his performance, stating, "It’s a pressure situation, but I think that's something we have to be comfortable with. I know if you’re playing meaningful games down the line, those situations are part of it."

Meanwhile, Bryan Rust of the Penguins reached his personal milestone during the game, marking his 600th career game and becoming the ninth player to achieve 400 points with the Penguins. He acknowledged the significance of the moment, saying, "Any time you can get a milestone - obviously it's not Sid's 9,000th assist - but it's something for me, which is nice."

After the game, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan praised his team’s effort. "I thought we played extremely hard. I loved our compete level down the stretch. We get one with the goalie pulled at the end... It was a real good NHL hockey game," he expressed.

The victory marked another step forward for the Panthers as they prepare for their next games, keeping their playoff hopes alive and showcasing the depth of their roster on what was again, another hard-fought evening of hockey. Florida heads on the road for two games against the Colorado Avalanche and Utah Hockey Club, proving they have gained momentum at just the right time.
