A terrifying incident unfolded at the Kaufland supermarket located on Hauptstraße in Waldheim, Saxony, on Saturday afternoon when shoppers reported severe respiratory problems after exposure to suspected irritant gas. The local police confirmed the gas attack, which prompted immediate emergency response efforts involving police, fire units, and medical staff.
The chemical irritant attack, which occurred around 5:20 PM, affected 41 individuals, including two children and one teenager, leading to 15 of them being rushed to hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, all were released later without any long-term health effects. Police spokesperson Marcus Gerschler stated, “After initial care by emergency services on site, all affected individuals were treated and later released.”
Witnesses described the terrifying moments when the attack occurred. "The eyes began to burn, the throat was dry, the lips burned like fire, and everyone started to cough," shared one victim on social media, capturing the panic and distress felt by many during the incident.
Authorities received the first call about the incident at 5:22 PM, and swift action ensued. The German Red Cross's Rapid Response Team was dispatched to the scene, along with fire crews from Waldheim and nearby Richzenhain. Officers began evacuations, ensuring public safety.
According to preliminary reports, it is believed the assailant used an unknown substance, likely either irritant gas or pepper spray, which was released within the store premises. Gerschler noted, “Currently, we are investigating the case as potential dangerous bodily harm. Video footage is being analyzed to help identify the perpetrator.”
Firefighters were quick on the scene, equipped to handle hazardous material incidents. They conducted safety checks, ventilated the store, and secured the area. Daniel Seifert, the community fire chief, led the operation, praising the readiness and professionalism of his crew. Mayor Steffen Ernst noted, “It calms me to know how well these firefighters are prepared for such emergencies. My gratitude goes to the other rescue workers too.”
The Kaufland management reacted immediately, closing the store right after the attack to prioritize customer safety. Fortunately, the store has since re-opened for business. Andrea Kübler from the Kaufland corporate communication team reported, “The technical systems at the store were checked, and technical failure was ruled out.”
Mayor Ernst also confirmed actions taken to guarantee safety moving forward. A security service has been contracted for the coming days, emphasizing the seriousness of customer safety following such alarming events.
Despite the stressful weekend, customers returned to the Kaufland on Monday morning, shopping to prepare for New Year celebrations, demonstrating community resilience. The supermarket was once more buzzing with activity, merging the festive spirit with concerns from the previous days.
Community members are breathing somewhat easier knowing the local authorities are taking steps to address the incident effectively. The investigation continues, with officers actively pursuing leads based on witness testimonies and the review of surveillance footage.
For now, both officials and the community are expressing relief at the lack of severe injuries. The urgency of examining local safety, emergency preparedness, and community well-being remains dull but persistent as Waldheim moves forward, thankful for the swift response of their local emergency services.
