Pam Bondi Takes Command As Attorney General

Former Florida AG asserts tough stance on immigration and crime enforcement amid political backlash.

Before Pam Bondi was selected as Attorney General under President Donald Trump, she was contemplating her return to the role she once held as Florida’s Attorney General. Bondi, who previously served Florida from 2011 to 2019, revealed she had thoughts of running again due to Ashley Moody's term limits but shifted gears when Trump reached out to her. “I was seriously considering running for Attorney General in Florida again, because I was termed out. I learned if I sit out, I could run again,” Bondi explained on My View with Lara Trump. “Then he called me early one morning... He needed me to do this job, so I’m going to try to be the best attorney general I can ever be,” she added.

Following her appointment on February 5, 2025, Bondi wasted no time making headlines with her hardline stance on immigration compliance across the country. During her appearance on Fox News, she asserted, “You’d best comply with federal law, or you will be next,” warning Democratic governors like New York’s Kathy Hochul and Illinois’s J.B. Pritzker about the consequences of protecting illegal aliens. The tension escalated as Hochul publicly rebuked her, stating, “We expect Pam Bondi’s worthless, publicity-driven lawsuit to be a total failure.” Bondi’s response was immediate and firm: “Bring it on!”

Her administration's focus aims at reverting the Department of Justice to its core function of addressing violent crime, prominently mentioning the drug cartels and criminal activities related to illegal immigration as pressing concerns. “We are sick and tired of Americans being murdered, and these states protecting illegal aliens,” Bondi stated. This sentiment was echoed through the political battlegrounds made evident by remarks from Pritzker, who retorted, “Unlike Donald Trump, we follow the law in Illinois,” highlighting the palpable divide on enforcement policies.

A significant project Bondi is undertaking as Attorney General involves the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. During her discussions with media, she confirmed, “The client list is currently on my desk and is awaiting review.” This news promises to bring transparency and accountability to Epstein's network, stirring public interest and media scrutiny. Bondi is resolute about her commitment, portraying this move not only as fulfillment of responsibilities but as part of her broader goals to combat exploitation and crime.

Bondi's tenure seems poised for confrontation as she continues to rally support for tougher enforcement of federal laws. She defended her high-profile role at CPAC 2025 against criticisms of partisanship stating, “Taking violent crime off the street, fighting the fentanyl epidemic… how is this partisan?” Her response reflects her tactic for rallying conservative bases and accruing backing from Trump's loyalists.

The former Florida AG has expressed ambitions to be more than just a figurehead, stating, “And it’s not just me; it’s an entire team.” This collective effort is motivated by the considerable weight of the administration’s objectives tied to immigration and public safety. Yet, her remarks, such as “They know they have nothing and can’t come after us all,” aimed at rallying the conservative defense against opposition, especially from those like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose vocal stance against Bondi's warnings claimed: “These baseless threats are meant to intimidate us.”

This turbulent political environment has not only put Bondi under scrutiny but has also ignited debates on human rights and public safety, with both sides of the aisle weighing heavily on the impact of her aggressive policies. It remains to be seen how these initiatives will shape her tenure. A push from Oklahoma to transfer convicted inmate George John Hanson, ordered by Bondi, marks her tough stance on crime once again. Promoting the death penalty has been part of the wider, more controversial efforts to support President Trump’s justice agenda. “The Department of Justice owes it to the victim and her family to transfer inmate Hanson,” Bondi justified, emphasizing the need for justice.

Bondi's actions reflect the significant shifts and contentious climate prevalent under the Trump administration. From pressing for immigration compliance to tackling crime and releasing Epstein documents, her position as Attorney General marks the convergence of varied motivations aimed at fortifying the administration's foundational principles. Amidst political contention and public discourse, Pam Bondi's agenda continues to manifest as both combative and transformative, echoing the wider shifts within the justice system and the national political climate.
