Pakistan Braces For Widespread Rain And Hailstorms

Intermittent rain and severe weather expected from Islamabad to Kashmir over the coming days.

ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast predicting widespread rain and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from March 25 to March 27, 2025. This weather system, influenced by a strong westerly wave, is expected to bring not only rain but also scattered hailstorms in upper areas, signaling significant changes in weather conditions.

According to the PMD, different regions, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, are set to experience varying intensities of rain over the next few days. Specifically, the upper areas are anticipated to see heavier precipitation alongside strong winds.

On March 25, the forecasts indicate that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir will encounter rain, thunderstorms, and even snowfall in higher altitudes. Islamabad and parts of northeastern Balochistan will also experience rain and thunderstorms, with maximum temperatures projected to remain between 29°C and 31°C.

In the wake of these predictions, the PMD reported, "The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted intermittent rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms, with snowfall over high mountains, in different parts of the country during the next 24 hours.” This early warning is vital for residents and travelers in these areas to stay prepared.

Moving into the mid-week, conditions are favorable for the development of hailstorms, particularly in the northern regions which will include parts of Punjab. Lahore, Rawalpindi, and surrounding districts like Attock and Chakwal are under alert for potential thunderstorms that could disrupt daily activities.

The forecast highlights that for March 26, Lahore and several districts across Punjab, such as Sialkot and Gujranwala, will have partly cloudy skies with rainy conditions likely throughout the day. Residents are advised to exercise caution as gusty winds and lightning are predicted to accompany the storms, which, as noted, "may damage standing crops and loose structures like electric poles and solar panels," as reported.

On the heels of this expected weather front, Islamabad's maximum temperatures are likely to dip slightly, promoting cooler conditions alongside the rain. Meanwhile, areas like Mithi, previously noted as the hottest location in Pakistan with temperatures soaring to 42°C, are also likely to see a drop in temperature with the onset of rain.

Specific details on weather conditions indicate that parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly districts like Peshawar and Abbottabad, will face thunderstorms with isolated heavy rain likely, along with hailstorms in the southern regions. In contrast, regions in Sindh are expected to remain mostly dry but may witness gusty winds during the afternoon, keeping overall weather conditions varied across the country.

Tourists heading to mountainous areas like Murree and Galliyat should remain vigilant, as heavy rain may cause landslides and slippery conditions. The PMD particularly urges caution during this period, especially in regions prone to flash flooding such as Chitral and Dir which could see significant rainfall.

The PMD continues to monitor these weather changes closely and is set to issue updates as new data becomes available. Preparation is crucial as residents in affected areas brace for what could be a tumultuous few days of severe weather.

In summary, with rain and hailstorms anticipated across multiple regions, the citizens in and around Islamabad and Punjab are urged to stay updated on the weather and heed any advisories issued for safety. As this weather system unfolds, the PMD is committed to keeping the public informed about the evolving climatic conditions.
