Packers Block Field Goal To Secure Eleventh Straight Win Over Bears

Green Bay prevails 20-19 with thrilling last-second defensive play to maintain dominance over Chicago

The Green Bay Packers showcased their resilience once again, edging out the Chicago Bears with a nail-biting 20-19 victory at Soldier Field on November 17, 2024. With this win, the Packers not only extended their dominance over the Bears to 11 consecutive games but also boosted their standing as they vie for playoff contention. The game, marked by dramatic twists and turns, had fans on the edge of their seats until the very last moment.

The deciding play came just as the clock ran down. Bears kicker Cairo Santos lined up for what would have been the game-winning 46-yard field goal. But Karl Brooks, the Packers’ rookie defensive lineman, had other ideas. Just as Santos executed the kick, Brooks leapt through the line, getting his hand on the ball and effectively blocking the attempt, sealing Green Bay's narrow win. "I kinda knew, like, I'm gonna block this," Brooks said confidently after the game, expressing the determination he felt leading up to the play.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love led his team with poise, completing 13 of 17 passes for 261 yards, including a pivotal touchdown pass early on. Love's contributions on the ground were equally impressive, as he rushed for the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The final three minutes of the game highlighted his ability to perform under pressure, particularly when he found Christian Watson for a spectacular 60-yard catch-and-run, bringing the Packers deep within Bears territory.

Watson had quite the day, finishing with 150 receiving yards, which marked a career-high. The prolific receiver had several key plays, none more impactful than his 60-yard sprint, setting up Love’s rushing touchdown from the one-yard line. Despite the excitement of the touchdown, the Packers failed to convert on the two-point attempt, maintaining just a one-point lead.

For the Bears, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams put forth considerable effort, throwing for 231 yards and contributing 70 yards on the ground. His ability to stay calm and make big plays, particularly on third down, was evident. A notable moment came when Williams connected with freshman receiver Rome Odunze for pivotal completions, leading to Santos's field goal attempt. Coach Matt Eberflus noted the positives amid the loss, emphasizing the offensive progress they’d made during the game.

Both teams' strategies were on display throughout the game. The Packers quickly took control with a touchdown on their opening drive, with Love connecting with Jayden Reed for the first score. The team’s efficient passing and running plays showcased their ability to exploit gaps in the Bears' defense. Conversely, the Bears managed to put together successful drives but struggled to finish, leading to frustrating moments for their fans. Their offensive rhythm seemed revitalized, especially with the recent shake-up following the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, which saw Thomas Brown take up the mantle mid-season.

Despite their woes, the Bears were able to capitalize on opportunities, including De’Andre Swift's impressive 39-yard touchdown run. This score briefly gave Chicago the lead late in the third quarter. The Bears' drive to take control of the game was bolstered by their ability to convert on difficult third downs, showcasing Williams's growing confidence and ability as he battled through early setbacks, including two early sacks.

Yet as the game progressed, it became clear the Packers’ defense was not to be underestimated. Solid play from veterans like T.J. Slaton and Rashan Gary added important stops against the Bears' rushing attack, helping to set the stage for Brooks's game-clinching block. Reflecting on the game, Brooks remarked on the teamwork involved: "I said [to Lukas Van Ness], ‘Hey, just do this, this for me.’ He did it and I got a hand on it.”

With this win, the Packers improved their record to 7-3, firmly positioning themselves as contenders for the playoffs, and maintaining their commanding lead over the Bears, who fell to 4-6. The Bears have not managed to defeat the Packers since 2018, and the frustration among their fanbase was palpable as each season continues to slip away.

The upstart Packers now look toward their next matchup—a home game against the San Francisco 49ers, where they hope to carry the momentum from this thrilling victory. On the flip side, the Bears will attempt to regroup and find their footing before facing the Minnesota Vikings at home next week. Both teams reflect the volatility of the NFL season, where any game can turn on just one pivotal moment, and this clash was no exception.

This latest chapter of the storied Packers-Bears rivalry demonstrates the unpredictability and excitement of the NFL, showcasing young talents and resilient teams determined to make their mark as the season progresses. With the stakes growing higher, both franchises will have to sharpen their skills and strategize for the upcoming challenges as they navigate the winding path toward the playoffs.
