Pack Of Pit Bulls Maul Schenectady Man To Death

James Provost tragically killed by multiple dogs during horrific attack on Central Avenue

A disturbing incident unfolded recently on the evening of October 9, 2024, when James Provost, 59, from Schenectady, was killed by a pack of at least eight to nine mixed-breed pit bulls. The tragic attack occurred around 6 PM at a residential property located on Central Avenue in Albany, New York, adjacent to where the animals were housed. This horrific event has sparked outrage and concern across the community.

According to Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins, the department received multiple emergency calls detailing the gruesome scene. Officers arrived just three to four minutes after the first report, to find Provost under attack by the aggressive dogs. Witnesses reported hearing frantic barking and Provost’s desperate pleas for help. Video footage from CBS 6 showed the reality of the attack, capturing Provost as he struggled to fend off the dogs before he was dragged helplessly to the ground.

Upon arrival, one officer attempted to intervene by discharging his firearm, managing to shoot one of the dogs. This action startled the remaining dogs, allowing them to disperse and giving the officer and other responders room to assist Provost, who was found with several wounds and lying unconscious on the ground. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The unsettling dynamics around the situation grew more complex as police later confirmed discovering a total of 24 dogs at the residence. Of these, 15 were identified as puppies. None of the animals had valid licenses, and investigations revealed no prior complaints against this large group of dogs.

Local authorities have stated the owner of the dogs, identified as a woman residing in Cohoes, is cooperating with the investigation. She reportedly does not currently live at the home where the dogs were housed. Chief Hawkins noted the severe nature of the attack and mentioned the distinct possibility of criminal charges being filed, especially considering the quantity of dogs kept at the residence—a situation believed to be against local ordinances.

Past records show this address had previously been visited by law enforcement for various complaints, including drug activity, leading to earlier confiscation of several dogs back in May of the same year. "This was not the first time we had to deal with issues at this location," Hawkins stated. "Back then, we confiscated some dogs due to concerns about their conditions and the activities happening at the residence. It’s alarming to see this escalate to such tragic consequences."

Animal control services, namely the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, have taken custody of the dogs involved. All dogs are being assessed and will be held pending the outcome of the investigation. The city’s Dangerous Dog law allows for the possibility of euthanization of dogs involved in fatal attacks, provided evidence of their previous aggressive behavior can be established.

At this moment, the investigation continues as officials seek to piece together how this tragedy unfolded. Questions linger about why Provost was on the property and how the dogs managed to escape. The community is left grappling with the horror of the event, as many mourn the loss of Provost, who is remembered by friends and family as having been beloved and kind-hearted.

The current focus of law enforcement is to understand all aspects of the situation leading up to Provost’s violent death. Chief Hawkins assured the public, "We will pursue this matter thoroughly and hold accountable anyone who contributed to this horrific incident. Our goal now is to get to the bottom of this tragedy and deliver justice for James Provost and his family." With the case still open, various news outlets and local communities are closely following developments as information emerges.

Meanwhile, local community members have started discussions about the safety regulations concerning pet ownership and the potential need for stricter laws to prevent future incidents like this. While Provost’s family grieves, the emotional ripple effects are being felt throughout Albany, reminding everyone of the fragility of life and the responsibilities of pet ownership.
