Oxford Schools Elevate Community Engagement Efforts

Magdalen College School and EBC Financial Group amplify educational partnerships to support social mobility and local welfare.

Oxford's educational institutions are solidifying their commitment to social mobility and community engagement, as evidenced by recent reports and initiatives. Magdalen College School has unveiled its Partnerships and Sustainability Report 2025, which outlines its various partnerships with primary schools and the community, marking over five decades of commitment to social responsibility.

Located in the heart of Oxford, Magdalen College School has long been involved in community service, significantly impacting local education and welfare. According to the report, the school’s community service organization organizes lower sixth pupils to volunteer weekly, conducting workshops on reading, maths, science, music, and drama at local primary schools. This past year, approximately 100 primary school children benefited from one-on-one reading sessions, and around 60 pupils from 11 partner schools participated in hands-on science activities.

The school's involvement doesn’t stop at educational workshops; it also runs the Rose Hill community larder, which has been pivotal during tough economic times. The larder distributes three tonnes of food monthly and provides groceries, household items, and personal care products to over 350 individuals each week, demonstrating the school’s dedication to alleviating food insecurity.

Magdalen College School has received recognition for its substantial contributions to social mobility, receiving the Independent Schools of the Year Award for its bursary provision and academic enrichment programs. Helen Pike, Master of Magdalen College School, expressed the sentiment behind these efforts: "Being part of the fabric of Oxford for over half a millennium entails a responsibility toward the city of the future. The whole Magdalen College School community benefits from our commitments to partnerships and sustainability, and deepening our impact lies at the heart of our strategy for the future."

Further afield, EBC Financial Group is making strides to support education through its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The global brokerage firm is backing the Ramakrishna Vedanta Vidyapith school, situated in West Bengal, India, which has been instrumental in empowering local communities for 25 years. Their partnership aims to provide educational materials, uniforms, vocational classes, and extracurricular activities for 50 low-income students.

This initiative is part of EBC’s broader commitment alongside the Shakti Empowerment Education Foundation, which emphasizes uplifting marginalized populations through educational support. David Barrett, CEO of EBC Financial Group (UK), stated, "At EBC, we recognise the true power of education creates the foundation for transforming societies and creating pathways to lasting change. Our partnership with the Shakti Regeneration Institute is more than sponsorship—it reflects our dedication to uplifting the next generation as we support the Ramakrishna Vedanta Vidyapith school. By investing in education at every level, we aim to create opportunities, promote equity, and address the challenges of our time."

Previously, EBC Financial Group had provided significant sponsorship for Oxford University's public education series, including episodes focused on topics like tax evasion and climate economics, aiming to broaden public dialogue on impactful economic issues. This partnership with Oxford highlights the importance of education as not only knowledge-driven but also as necessary for societal evolution.

Both Magdalen College School and EBC Financial Group portray education as not just confined within the classrooms but extending to community members who can benefit from additional resources and support. These efforts reflect the institutions’ shared belief in the transformative power of education. They continue to strive to empower the next generation and encourage inclusive, well-rounded educational experiences, particularly for those from marginalized backgrounds.

The schools' collaborations and the dedicated efforts of organizations such as EBC signal a promising horizon for community engagement and social mobility initiatives, positioning education as the primary tool for breaking cycles of poverty.

Approaching their missions with consciousness and cohesion, both institutions demonstrate how partnerships not only enrich educational pathways for students but also respond to the pressing needs of their respective communities. Through comprehensive involvement, they establish sustainable frameworks of support aimed not just at enhancing individual lives, but also at nurturing the fabric of society itself.

With these noble aims, Magdalen College School and EBC Financial Group reflect the potential of educational initiatives to create long-lasting, positive change within their communities.
