Owen Moxon Joins Stockport County From Portsmouth

The midfielder aims for success after leaving the Championship club for more playing time at Edgeley Park.

Stockport County has secured the signing of midfielder Owen Moxon from Portsmouth FC, marking the completion of their winter transfer window activities. The 27-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, with the transfer fee remaining undisclosed. Moxon, who enjoyed substantial success at Portsmouth, where he played 28 matches and scored once, joins the Hatters full of ambition to contribute to their push for promotion.

Moxon’s transition to Stockport County arrives after he played a pivotal role for Portsmouth, helping them clinch the League One title last season. Despite his contributions, including netting what was recognized as the Goal of the Season against Derby County, he found himself struggling for playing time this season after the club's promotion to the Championship. Now, he hopes to find regular first-team football with Stockport, currently sitting fourth in League One.

Stockport County manager Dave Challinor expressed excitement about Moxon's arrival, stating, "Owen is a player who has been spoken about across the three years I’ve been at the club. We feel we are adding an all-round midfielder, who can play energetically with exceptional passing range." Challinor sees Moxon as integral not just for the short term but as key to the club’s long-term objectives of climbing back to the Championship.

Challinor’s enthusiasm for Moxon reflects the player's impressive skill set, including his remarkable set-piece delivery and ability to score. "Owen can chip in with his share of goals, which is something we value greatly," he added. Such attributes have made Moxon stand out and resonate well with both the squad and the club’s strategic vision.

Portsmouth’s head coach John Mousinho also shared his thoughts on Moxon’s move, thanking him for his hard work during his time at the club. Mousinho stated, "We would like to thank Owen for his efforts here, especially in helping us win the League One title last season. Hopefully, this move will give Owen the regular first-team football he craves." Mousinho underscored Moxon’s commitment and consistent performance, emphasizing the midfielder’s potential to flourish at Stockport.

Alongside Moxon’s transfer, Stockport County has also signed Barnsley striker Sam Cosgrove and Norwich defender Brad Hills on loan, strengthening their squad as they vie for play-off glory. Cosgrove, who played for Plymouth Argyle and made a notable impact with 17 goals at Aberdeen, brings invaluable experience and firepower to the team. Challinor acknowledged Cosgrove's arrival as a significant boost for the Hatters' attacking options.

Hills, meanwhile, coming from Norwich City after last season’s loan at Accrington Stanley, adds depth to Stockport’s defense, with the expectation of making his debut against Barnsley soon.

For Moxon, the challenge at Stockport not only marks the next chapter of his career but also offers him the prospect of achieving yet another promotion, having previously celebrated success with both Carlisle United and Portsmouth. With his eyes set firmly on contributing to Stockport's aspirations and possibly realizing his goal of reaching the Championship again, Moxon is poised for action.

Director of Football Simon Wilson echoed the excitement around Moxon’s potential fit within the team, stating, "This opportunity came about quickly, and we were able to react because of our knowledge of Owen built up over the last few years. He has promotion experience and shown he can thrive at this level. We hope to give him the platform to continue performing at such heights." The collective optimism surrounding Moxon’s signing suggests he is seen as not merely another player, but as someone who can influence matches and inspire teammates.

With Moxon now at Edgeley Park, the hopes of Stockport County fans are riding high as they prepare for the remainder of the season. Already successful at previous clubs, Moxon’s ambition and talent might just prove to be the catalyst for the Hatters achieving their ultimate goal.
