Outer Banks Plane Crash Claims Five Lives

The community mourns as details emerge from the tragic September accident.

On September 28, 2024, tragedy struck the Outer Banks community when a single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Dare County Regional Airport, resulting in the death of five individuals, including four adults and one child. The incident has sent shockwaves through both the local population and surrounding areas.

The unfortunate event unfolded around 5 p.m. when the plane, identified as Cirrus SR22 with tail number N1281F, took off and crashed just minutes later at the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport. Local authorities reported the aircraft struck trees prior to crashing on the airport's runway and catching fire. Witnesses reported seeing smoke from miles away, alerting them to the catastrophe.

Brant Honeycutt, who works near the crash site, recounted, "I looked in my rearview mirror, just out of habit, after I made the turn, and I could see the smoke billowing. It gave me pause and I knew something fairly catastrophic had probably occurred." His reflections underline the severity of the moment as the community grapples with the reality of the tragedy.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been diligently working to determine the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation. A spokesperson from the NTSB confirmed the aircraft was registered to Pantheon Aviation LLC, based in Franklin, North Carolina. The exact details surrounding the crash's cause, as well as the victims' identities, are still being finalized, pending confirmation from the medical examiner.

Honeycutt noted, "Being in North Carolina, we know the Western part of our states is in a state of devastation as well, not just North Carolina. So, it’s kind of a lot to grasp right now, as far as what’s going on." This sentiment reflects the broader emotional turmoil as locals come to terms with the loss and begin to support one another through this difficult time.

The National Park Service is expected to reopen the park and the First Flight Airstrip following investigations. This decision marks the community’s first step toward returning to normality after the grim incident.

Locals have expressed their grief and solidarity through various means—community vigils and support for the victims' families are already being organized. The emotional repercussions of this sudden accident extend beyond those directly involved, impacting neighbors, friends, and community members who share the heartbreak of this loss.

While the investigation continues, the Outer Banks community is left grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event. Plans for memorials and support services for grieving families are underway, as residents pull together, reinforcing the tight-knit bond characteristic of the area.

This tragic plane crash not only raises questions about air safety but also shines a light on the fragility of life and the importance of community support during difficult times. The Outer Banks, known for its scenic beauty and close-knit community, now faces the somber reality of loss, reminding us all of the values of compassion and support as they navigate this painful chapter.
