Osnabrück's mayor, Katharina Pötter, is set to dispatch another unique Christmas card this year, showcasing the creative talents of local students. The design for this year's card was entrusted to students from the Graf-Stauffenberg-Gymnasium, who submitted their imaginative artwork to the city hall.
Earlier this month, Pötter received seven creative designs from the students, each vying for the honor of being featured on this year’s holiday card. The competition was intense, and according to Pötter, the decision was anything but simple. "Das war keine leichte Wahl" ("That was not an easy choice"), she stated during the official announcement of the winning design held at the Friedenhall of the town hall.
The winning design was created by 18-year-old Bao Chau Vu Cat, who depicted the festive theme of "Reindeer, Town Hall, and Felice Navidad." This design not only embodies the spirit of Christmas but also ensures the iconic town hall is showcased, as per the card's guidelines.
During the creative process, the students faced the peculiar challenge of creating Christmas-themed artwork during the summertime. "So wie Dominosteine und Spekulatius im Sommer produziert werden, da mit sie im September im Laden liegen" ("Just as Dominosteine and speculaas are produced in summer so they lie on the shelves come September"), Pötter humorously noted. To immerse the students fully, their art teacher, Ricarda Rahe, provided cookies during class, setting the festive tone for their creative endeavors.
The final artwork was carefully selected by a jury led by Pötter, demonstrating the importance placed on this project within the local community. The completed card is set to be distributed not only to residents but also to notable recipients such as past Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize winners, holders of the Möser Medal, and recipients of the Citizens' Medal. It will also be sent to international partner cities, with each card translated appropriately for its destination.
For Bao Chau Vu Cat and her classmates, the project was both rewarding and educational. Each participant received a token of appreciation, and Vu Cat was awarded a special voucher to purchase additional art supplies, encouraging her continued artistic pursuits.
This initiative by the city of Osnabrück reinforces the bond between the community and its youth, showcasing local talent and creativity. The seven best designs are available for viewing on the city’s official website, allowing the community to appreciate the diverse artistic expressions of its students.
The distribution of the Christmas card is not simply about sending holiday greetings; it signifies the high regard and camaraderie the city holds for its citizens and the broader international community. Mayor Katharina Pötter’s initiative brings together art, culture, and civic pride as Osnabrück moves toward the festive season full of hope and goodwill.
