Wayne Osmond, the beloved baritone singer of the famed Osmond family music group, passed away on January 1, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 73. His family confirmed the news, stating he had suffered a massive stroke prior to his death.
Born on August 28, 1951, in Ogden, Utah, Wayne was one of nine siblings who formed musical formations known initially as the Osmond Brothers. The family first began performing together as a barbershop quartet within their church congregation.
Wayne's brother, Merrill Osmond, shared on social media, "He had a massive stroke,” adding he was able to reach the hospital to say goodbye. The family's statement indicated, "His legacy of faith, music, love, and laughter have influenced the lives of many people around the world. He would want everyone to know...that families are forever, and banana splits are the best dessert. We love him and will miss him dearly." Wayne's daughter also honored him on Facebook, referencing him as her "beloved husband and father."
The Osmonds rose to fame after being discovered at Disneyland, landing performances on popular shows like The Andy Williams Show and later becoming teen idols. The group’s breakthrough hit, "One Bad Apple," topped the charts for five weeks starting February 1971. They went on to produce several more hits such as "Yo-Yo" and "Down by the Lazy River," becoming prominent figures on the music scene during the 1970s.
Despite his fame, Wayne faced significant health challenges throughout his life. He was diagnosed with ependymoma, a type of brain cancer, at the age of 46, which required extensive surgery and treatment. "I went back to performing six months after I was diagnosed, wearing my cowboy hat on stage since all my hair had fallen out from radiation," he shared during the Coping With Cancer magazine interview. Following his stroke in 2012, Wayne lost the ability to play guitar, but he remained committed to his music career. He and his brothers continued to perform together, with their final scheduled appearance occurring solely at their sister Marie's birthday party.
His brother Jay Osmond expressed his deep sorrow over Wayne's passing on social media, stating, "My heart is deeply saddened for the loss of my brother Wayne. It is said where there is great love, there is great grief as we part during our earthly journeys." He highlighted his special bond with Wayne, calling him his roommate and confidant throughout their lives.
The Osmonds' immense popularity led them to be honored with their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing their contributions to the music industry. Their show The Osmond Family Show aired for several years, capturing the hearts of audiences with their wholesome entertainment and harmonious music. This comedy, variety show established them as household names, showcasing their talent, humor, and family values.

Wayne’s contributions to family music and lasting impact on his fans and family will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the music he created and the love he instilled within his family and community. His siblings have expressed deep grief but also joy knowing he is part of something bigger.
