Oscar Piastri Claims Historic First Pole Position At Chinese GP

The McLaren driver sets the fastest qualifying time ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris for the race starting Sunday.

Australian driver Oscar Piastri scored the first pole position of his Formula 1 career in a stunning qualifying round for the Chinese Grand Prix held at the Shanghai International Circuit on Saturday, March 22, 2025. In an impressive display of speed, Piastri clocked in with a lap time of 1 minute 30.141 seconds, solidifying his position at the front of the grid for the race set to commence early Sunday morning at 4 AM (Brasília time).

Piastri, representing McLaren, outpaced Mercedes driver George Russell, who secured second place with a time of 1 minute 30.223 seconds. McLaren teammate Lando Norris also showcased exceptional performance, finishing third in 1 minute 30.793 seconds. Meanwhile, reigning four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull and multi-champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari rounded out the top five, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Piastri, who previously displayed his racing prowess by winning the Hungarian and Azerbaijan Grand Prix last season. Until now, he had not started from pole position in any race. “It’s incredible that Oscar has managed his first pole. He has been close many times, and this was a mega lap,” said Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, celebrating the young driver’s achievement.

On the other hand, Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, driving for Sauber, struggled during the qualification session, finishing 19th and not advancing past Q1. This marks a challenging start for the rookie driver, who faced difficulties trying to gain momentum on the track, even citing issues with traffic during his second fast lap attempt.

Notably, the qualification rounds showcased fierce competition amongst seasoned racers. In Q1, Lando Norris clinched the fastest time, while Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls and Yuki Tsunoda also made notable impressions by grabbing second and third places, respectively. As qualifying progressed into Q2, Norris maintained his dominance, further establishing McLaren's competitive edge.

While the qualifying rounds were intense, Hamilton’s exceptional performance in the earlier sprint race on March 22, where he finished first, showcased his prowess after joining Ferrari at the beginning of the season. “I think people underestimate how difficult it is to enter a new team, to understand a new team,” Hamilton reflected, acknowledging the challenges he has faced but expressing his eagerness to improve with Ferrari.

Hamilton’s victory in the sprint race added eight extra points to Ferrari’s tally, laying an optimistic groundwork as the team gears up for the main event on Sunday. Companions for the afternoon showdown include Charles Leclerc, who finished sixth, trailing Hamilton.

The upcoming Chinese Grand Prix presents a significant opportunity not just for Piastri, but for all racers as strategies will need to be navigated artfully to contend with the pressure of competition. As Piastri prepares for the race—the long-awaited highlight where he aims to convert his pole into a lasting success—attention will also be on Hamilton and Verstappen as they look to maintain their momentum from impressive sprint performances.

As the teams finalize their preparations for the race day, excitement builds among fans and teams alike, with speculations about how this season will unfold, especially with Piastri’s first pole and the competitive nature of the field. The racing organization noted that of the current F1 lineup, now consisting of ten drivers who have achieved pole positions, Piastri stands out as the 107th different driver to ever secure this honor in Formula 1 history.

With Piastri at the forefront of the grid and a challenging competition ahead, all eyes will be on Shanghai for what promises to be an exhilarating race in this year’s F1 calendar.
